Giro d'Italia: Sam Bennett wins stage 7 in Praia a Mare

Bora-Hansgrohe rider out-paces Viviani, Bonifazio

Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) claimed his maiden Grand Tour victory on stage 7 of the Giro d’Italia. The Irish sprinter timed his final acceleration perfectly, coming over the top of Elia Viviani (Quick-Step Floors) and Niccolo Bonifazio (Bahrain-Merida) in the final 75 meters.

Bennett, who has come so close on a number of occasions to winning a Grand Tour stage, punched the air as he crossed the line, before being swamped by his teammates at the line.

The technical run-in provided a frantic finish, and Viviani looked on course to take his third stage win of the race when he came around Sacha Modolo (EF-Drapac) with the line in sight. The Quick-Step rider had wisely avoided the fight for position in last 10 kilometres, instead instructing his teammates to keep him safe, but still in contention, as the likes of LottoNL, EF, and Trek battled for supremacy.

With 1.7km to go the Italian began to move up, and while his lead-out looked well-timed and efficient, Bennett had latched onto the back of the Quick-Step train. The Irishman, who has remained patient for his first Grand Tour win since making his debut at the Tour de France in 2015, freewheeled for the briefest of moments as Viviani moved onto Modolo’s wheel, and when the Quick-Step rider moved to the right and opened his sprint, Bennett used the move as a launch pad for his own sprint.

A fast finishing Bonifazio could not get on terms after a late puncture disrupted his race, but Bennett fully deserved his victory.

"I feel relieved," the Irishman said at the finish.

"I’ve been so close so many times in the Giro, to really get the timing right was key with so many fast sprinters here. It’s not easy to beat Viviani - he really knows what he’s doing. My time came - at one point I thought it would never come. I want to thank the team and everybody who got me to this point.

"I just had to get that wheel, and a bit of patience as well. I had to freewheel for a moment at one point because I knew it was a just bit too early. When the time was right I really took it up."

After wins in Paris-Nice, Turkey and Paris-Bourges, Bennett finally has the major victory his palmarès desperately needed and, at 27, has plenty of time to use this victory as a breakthrough in his career. All it took was a little patience, and some fast legs, of course.

Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) retained his overall lead, with Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) and Esteban Chaves (Mitchelton-Scott) remaining second and third.

Off the volcano

After Mount Etna, Sicily, and the arduous transfer to mainland Italy, Giro organisers RCS provided the peloton with a parcours to ease their legs back into action, with a pan-flat 159 kilometres along the coast between Pizzo and Praia a Mare.

With the Etna climb still in their legs, the peloton were willing to see an early break disappear up the road, but once again it took time for the right move to form. With only a scattering of sprint stages on offer at this year's race, any potential break had to be met with approval from Viviani and his Quick-Step squad. So, when time trial specialist Tony Martin (Katusha-Alpecin) helped to create one such move, the warnings lights in the Quick-Step team cars began to flash. Chasing a rider of Martin's calibre along the seafront for almost four hours is no one's idea of fun, and within minutes the attack was snuffed out.

Katusha, however, were not to be put off and duly sent 2013 Giro stage winner Maxim Belkov up the road with Markel Irizar Aranburu (Trek-Segafredo) and Davide Ballerini (Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec) for company. The trio remained out front for the majority of the stage but were never afforded more than four minutes as the sprinters' teams, along with Mitchelton-Scott, controlled affairs.

With 30 kilometres remaining, the gap had dwindled to two minutes as Quick-Step, Trek-Segafredo, and LottoNL-Jumbo controlled the pace. Team Sky, aiming to protect Chris Froome, played a cameo role at the front of proceedings but when the break was finally reeled in with 15 kilometres remaining, Katusha tried twice more. Perhaps it was payback for not allowing Martin - an ex-Quick-Step rider of course - room off the front, or perhaps the team genuinely had belief in winning, but first Alex Dowsett, and then Mads Würtz Schmidt jumped clear. Neither rider, despite their best efforts, gained more than 20 meters before the sprinters' teams changed their trajectory, softly upped the pace, and regained control at the front of the race.

The flat-out descent towards the line saw the pace shoot up to almost 80kph but, with Quick-Step holding back until the final two kilometres, a messy lead-out ensued, with a catalogue of teams looking to position their sprinter towards the front. It was Modolo who opened his sprint first, with Viviani the red-hot favourite on his wheel. When the Quick-Step rider burst clear Bennett reacted perfectly, and after so many near misses could finally enjoy a day on top of the podium in a Grand Tour.
