Nys, Vos continue to lead UCI 'cross standings

While Belgian national champion Sven Nys (Landbouwkrediet) failed to land on the podium in last Sunday's penultimate World Cup round in Liévin, France, his fourth place finish was good enough to maintain his position atop the latest UCI cyclo-cross standings, released on Tuesday.

Kevin Pauwels (Sunweb-Revor), runner-up in Liévin after a fall on the stairs during the final lap ended his duel for victory against Zdenek Stybar (Omega Pharma-Quick Step), maintains his second-place position in the rankings with 2,313 points, 77 behind Nys.

Stybar, who won his first World Cup race of the season in Liévin, remains in third overall with 2,140 points.

The penultimate World Cup round accounted for two riders' jumps into the top-20 overall, as third-placed Radomir Simunek (BKCP-Powerplus) moved from 23rd to 14th and Polish champion Mariusz Gil (Baboco), 13th on Sunday, moved up from 28th to 19th.

US national 'cross champion Jeremy Powers (Rapha Focus), 14th in Liévin, continues as the highest-ranked North America rider on the standings, holding 11th place with 994 points.

The top of the elite men's nations standings remains unchanged, as Belgium dominates with 6,096 points. The Czech Republic continues in second place with 3,306 points while France remains in third at 2,828 points.

World champion Marianne Vos (Rabobank Women's Team), winner of the women's World Cup race in Liévin, maintains her lead atop the elite women's standings, although US champion Katie Compton (Rabobank-Giant Off-road Team) closed the gap considerably. Vos's points total remained unchanged at 1,960, as she duplicated her win from last year in the penultimate World Cup round. Compton finished third at Sunday's World Cup, an event she skipped in 2011, and gained 140 points, bringing her total to 1,940, just 20 shy of Vos.

Daphny van den Brand (AA Drink - Leontien.nl), second in Liévin, moved up one place to third overall with 1,573 points, followed by British champion Helen Wyman (Kona), who also moved up one position from fifth to fourth with 1,477 points.

Sanne van Paassen (Brainwash) skipped Sunday's World Cup race and dropped from third to fifth overall, at 1,420 points.

The top three positions in the elite women's nations standings remain unchanged in the latest standings with the Netherlands (4,953) leading the United States (3,207) and Great Britain (2,995).

Mathieu van der Poel's remarkable season in the junior men's ranks continues as the Dutch champion and World Cup leader won the junior event in Liévin to boost his season points total to 210. He lead second placed Quentin Jauregui (France) by 86 points and third-placed Romain Seigle (France) by 116 points.

The USA's Andrew Dillman continues as the highest-ranked North American junior in eighth place with 68 points.

The junior men's nations standings are a tight contest with the Netherlands maintaining its lead at 271 points, followed closely by France (268) and Belgium (250). The United States continues in fourth place with 160 points, one point more than fifth place Spain.
