Enrico Gasparotto gave the Wanty-Groupe Gobert team a huge result when he took an emotional victory in the Amstel Gold Race, the second of the Italian's career.
The 34-year-old leapt away with Tinkoff's Michael Valgren on the final ascent of the Cauberg, and then patiently waited behind the Dane into the headwind, gambling that they could hold off the charging peloton behind. Gasparotto then easily out-sprinted his younger rival.
It was an enormous turn-around for the Dutch team, who spent the past few weeks mourning the death of Antoine Demoitié from the incident in Gent-Wevelgem.
Sonny Colbrelli (Bardiani-CSF) took the sprint for third.
