Spaniard Oscar Sevilla (Rock Racing) took the win in stage two ahead of three other breakaway members including Samuel Sanchez (Euskaltel), Hector Guerra (Liberty) and Freddy Montana (Boyacá).
The break escaped on the last climb of San Martin de Huerces to take around 50 seconds over the main peloton.
Portuguese Tiago Machado (Madeinox) assumed control of the general classification just ahead of tomorrow's double stage. Riders will tackle an 88km stage from Gijon to Aviles in the morning and a 14km individual time trial at Castrillon in the afternoon.
