Biography:
Jay Vine was born in Townsville, Australia on November 16, 1995. The climber turned professional with Alpecin-Fenix in 2021 after graduating from the Zwift Academy, a competition hosted by the online training program where riders battle to win a pro contract.
He hit the ground running in his first season with the Belgian team, finishing fifth at the Tour of Turkey in April before going on to make his Grand Tour debut at the Vuelta a España later in the year, taking third place on the summit finish of Pico Villuercas on stage 14.
Vine's progress only continued in 2022, the Australian beginning his year with the mountains jersey at the Etoile de Bessèges and, later in the spring, second overall at the Tours of Turkey and Norway. His big breakthrough would come, once again, at the Vuelta, however.
Vine picked up two stage wins at the race, winning with 6km solos at the summit finishes of Pico Jano and Colláu Fancuaya on stages 6 and 8. He vaulted into the lead of the mountain classification as a result and looked all set to take the polka dot jersey to Madrid before sadly being forced out of the race due to a crash just three days from the finish.
More wins were on the way following a move to UAE Team Emirates in 2023, including the Australian time trial title, the Tour Down Under and a stage and the mountain classification at the season-ending Tour of Turkey. Now established as a top climber in the peloton, he'll take on the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España in 2024.
