Biography:
Enric Mas is a Spanish Grand Tour specialist who started his career with Alberto Contador's development climb and joined the pro ranks with the Quick-Step Floors team in 2017.
Mas showed his talent by winning the Spanish junior time trial title in 2012 as a 17-year-old and in his under-23 years won the Tour de Savoie Mont Blanc and Giro della Valle d'Aosta Mont Blanc, both climber's showcase for espoirs, as well as the Volta ao Alentejo against riders in the elite ranks. The performances earned him his first WorldTour contract and he stayed with Patrick Lefevere's team through 2019.
In 2018, Mas made a splash with breakthrough a stage win in the Itzulia Basque Country and fourth overall in the Tour de Suisse, but he did not make the team's Tour de France squad. He instead led the team at the Vuelta a España, winning the penultimate stage in Andorra and finishing second overall behind Simon Yates. In his 2019 bid at the Tour de France Mas climbed as high as fourth overall after the time trial on stage 13 in Pau, but his race went downhill from there and he finished a distant 22nd behind race winner Egan Bernal. He ended the season winning the Gree Tour of Guangxi.
In the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season, Mas, now with the Movistar Team, revisited the Tour de France and finished fifth overall before racing the Vuelta a España and finishing fifth.
In his third Tour de France, Mas finished sixth overall then went onto race the Vuelta as co-leader alongside Colombian teammate Miguel Angel Lopez. Mas and Lopez were second and third in the GC behind Roglič after stage 17 to Lagos de Covadonga, and on stage 18, Lopez claimed the stage win at the Altu d'El Gamoniteiru. The fight for leadership hit a major snag on the penultimate stage when Mas leapt away with an attack and Lopez was commanded by his team car to not chase. As Mas' gap grew and Lopez's podium came under threat, the Colombian climbed off his bike and into the team car, then left the team altogether. Mas ended the race second overall.
The Spaniard struggled in 2022 with a case of the 'yips' - struggling mentally with descending after a crash in the Criterium du Dauphine and it hampered his Tour de France. He ended up dropping out after catching COVID-19 on stage 19. He rebounded at the Vuelta, finishing second.
Mas crashed out of the 2023 Tour de France on the opening stage.
