Egan Bernal and Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) played considerable roles in Strade Bianche with the Colombian finishing third and his younger teammate taking fifth after Mathieu van der Poel rode away from Bernal and Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-QuickStep) to win the Italian one-day race.

Bernal was one of the strongest in the race, but the former Tour de France winner was one of only two riders able to chase down and catch onto Van der Poel’s rear wheel when the Alpecin-Fenix rider attacked for the first time with 24km remaining in the race.
