Favero has established itself since the launch of its first power meter pedals in 2015 as the first choice for cycling power measurement, a metric that’s become a must-have for performance-minded cyclists.

The latest Favero Assioma Pro RS is its first complete pedal power meter for users of Shimano SPD-SL road pedals, adding to its range of pedal-based power meters and offering Shimano users accurate power measurement and easy swappability between bikes, as well as Favero’s advanced metrics and analysis.

The Favero Assioma Pro RS power meter carries the tech of the Assioma Pro MX over to a Shimano SPD-SL compatible road pedal that’s a great option for the many riders who opt for Shimano’s road pedal platform.

The Assioma Pro RS power meter offers pedal-based power measurement for Shimano SPD-SL users at a price that’s more affordable than the major competitors. It’s also easier to add to your bike and swap between bikes than a crank power meter.

Let’s take a closer look at its features.

All electronics in-body

As with the SPD-compatible Assioma Pro MX, the new SPD-SL Assioma Pro RS houses all the power meter electronics within the pedal spindle, where they’re IP67 protected from water and debris ingress, making the Assioma Pro RS completely weatherproof.

The battery too is inside the spindle and welded to the electronics to ensure a robust connection. The Assioma Pro RS can run for more than 60 hours on a single charge, with connectors to the clip-on charging cable neatly integrated in the pedal spindle.

There’s ANT+ and BLE connectivity to cycling computers, smartwatches and other head units and you can also visualise Favero’s advanced pedalling metrics and customise settings in its own Assioma app.

Quality pedal bodies

Favero’s attention to detail doesn’t stop at the electronics. The pedal bodies themselves are made from carbon fibre reinforced technopolymer, just like Shimano’s top end road pedals.

At 124.8g, the Assioma Pro RS is the lightest road power pedal available, weighing only around 10g more than a Dura-Ace pedal, and its 10.5mm stack height – which influences the efficiency of power transfer – is the lowest of any power meter pedal and close to that of the Dura-Ace pedal.

The Assioma Pro RS pedals turn on high quality needle roller bearings, which can withstand a 400kg load, offering reliability.

As the pedal bodies don’t contain any electronics, you can replace them if they get damaged. You can even swap quickly between SPD-SL and SPD bodies if you want a power meter for gravel use too; the separate pedal bodies aren’t expensive.

There’s the wide contact area for which Shimano road pedals are renowned, with Favero including stainless steel contact surfaces for durability. The cleat retainer’s tension can be altered through 28 points of adjustment, offering similar fine tuning to Shimano’s pedals.

Accurate power measurement

Favero has always been known for the quality and accuracy of its power measurement and the advanced metrics that it offers. The Assioma Pro RS brings this to Shimano road pedal users.

Favero claims accuracy of +/-1%, matching the best power meters available, thanks to its unique Instant Angular Velocity power calculation algorithm.

While some other power meters estimate instantaneous power values, a three-axis gyroscope integrated into Favero’s pedal measures the rotation speed throughout the pedal stroke. This leads to accurate real-time power measurement whatever the conditions, even if they change during a ride, including for users of oval chainrings.

The accurate power data is used by Favero to provide not just power but its Advanced Cycling Dynamics analysis, to help you to improve your pedalling.

Favero can show you where you’re delivering force on the pedal platform, via its Pedal Centre Offset metric, so you can identify pedalling asymmetries and muscle imbalances and fine-tune your cleat position to improve your pedalling technique.

Its Power Phase metric shows you the parts of the pedal stroke where you’re generating positive torque and contributing to power delivery.

Finally, Favero can identify the amount of time you’re riding seated versus standing with its Rider Position metric, allowing you to work on your climbing.

Value for money

Whether you choose single or dual sided measurement, the Assioma Pro RS power meter undercuts the competition (Image credit: Favero)

Favero has consistently offered lower prices for its pedal power meters than its competitors and its Assioma Pro RS is no exception.

The dual-sided Assioma Pro RS-2 is priced at £649 in the UK, $789 in the US and €578 plus VAT in the EU. The single sided Assioma Pro RS-1 is priced at £399 / $499 / €363 plus VAT.

Should you purchase the RS-1 and subsequently decide to upgrade to dual sided power measurement, the Assioma Pro RS-UP right side upgrade pedal is priced at £389 / $489 / €354.50 plus VAT in the EU.

You can buy Favero’s pedal power meters direct from Favero, with free shipping, or from top cycling retailers. To learn more about the Assioma Pro RS or make a purchase, head to Favero’s site.
