Britain's Peter Kennaugh celebrated his 20th birthday a day early with a win in Girobio stage three Sunday in Asiago, Italy. He formed part of a small escape group in the 166-kilometre stage and then out-sprinted Italy's Matteo Busato for the win.

The Girobio will finish after nine stages on Sunday in Bucine. Kennaugh is only 35 seconds behind race leader Cesare Benedetti and has a good chance of taking over the lead in today's 17-kilometre time trial in Pozzoleone.

Kennaugh comes hails the Isle of Man, like winner of Milano-Sanremo winner Mark Cavendish. The two rode together at the track world championships earlier this year.

Kennaugh won the scratch race at the 2006 junior worlds, junior and under-23 team pursuit at the 2007 European track championships and is Under 23 national road champion.

He competes in the Girobio with five other Brits on the national team. It is the Giro d'Italia ('Baby Giro') for under 27 riders.
