2014
The American started strongly in 2014, as he had done in 2013. He came second in the Tour of Oman and third in the Volta a Catalunya, where he won a stage. Unlike 2013, however, he built on it with a decent display at the Tour de France, where he finished fifth, as he had done two years before. He went on to repeat his USA Pro Cycling Challenge victory and capped his season with a World Championships gold medal in the team time trial with BMC.

2013
After somewhat of a breakthrough fifth place at the 2012 Tour de France, many had high hopes for van Garderen in 2013. He justified those hopes with strong showings in the first half of the season’s stage races. He started off with second at the Tour de San Luis, before taking fourth at Paris-Nice and third at the Criterium International. He then won the first stage race of his career with a convincing all-round display at the Tour of California.
It all boded well for the Tour but van Garderen flopped, finishing way down in 45th. He was leading the stage featuring a double ascent of Alpe d’Huez but fell away towards the end and had to settle for second. He bounced back to win the USA Pro Cycling Challenge in August.
