Michal Kwiatkowski sealed his second career Volta ao Algarve title with his final day victory at Malhão via a breakaway. The former world champion too his stage win a handful of seconds ahead of Ruben Guerreiro (Trek-Segafredo) and Serge Pauwels (Team Dimension Data). Teammate and race leader on the morning of stage 5, Geraint Thomas, finished in the peloton 1:50 minutes down on Kwiatkowski to slip to second on the general classification.

BMC's Tejay van Garderen jumped up to third overall to fill the third place on the podium.
