Latest News from the Race
The Ardennes Classics came to a close in 2017 with the familiar finale of Alejandro Valverde claiming the victory. The Movistar rider enjoyed his fourth career win at the Belgian race ahead of Dan Martin (QuickStep-Floors) with Michal Kwiatkowski (Team Sky) rounding out the podium. Pre-race Valverde promised to dedicate his victory and winning to Michele Scarponi and his family and remained true to his word.
There was a sombre start to Liege in 2017 as the peloton paid tribute to Scarponi with the majority of riders wearing black armbands as a mark of respect to the Italian.
"This win is for Michele Scarponi. He was a good friend of mine," Valverde said, fighting back the tears. "It hurts to think he's gone, I'll miss him. I'll give all my prize money from this victory to his family. This win is also dedicated to him."
Valverde's win continues his successful season that has included La Flèche Wallonne, Vuelta a Murcia, Ruta del Sol, Volta a Catalunya and Vuelta al Pais Vasco wins.
