Tour de Langkawi: Reguigui beats Henao on Fraser's Hill

MTN-Qhubeka rider takes race lead

Youcef Reguigui (MTN-Qhubeka) claimed victory atop Fraser’s Hill on the penultimate stage of the Tour de Langkawi. The victory secured Reguigui the lead in the general classification, which he should hold come the race’s conclusion in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow.

At the end of the 180km stage, the Algerian sprinter surged away from a reduced bunch in the final 300 metres of the category-one climb with Sebastien Henao (Team Sky) and Valerio Agnoli (Astana) coming home second and third.

Caleb Ewan (Orica-GreenEdge), who led the race coming into the stage, finished over 14 minutes down and so Reguigui now leads the overall by 10 seconds ahead of Henao and Pierre-Luc Perichon (Bretagne-Seche-Environnement).

“This is my first victory this year and it is a victory for Messa, my one-month-old baby,” said a delighted Reguigui. “I was happy because I had good legs today and in the last 25 kilometres I was on the front with Jacques [Van Rensburg] and Natnael [Berhane]. Normally I work for Natnael but before 5km to go he told me he didn’t have the legs, so I made the decision to stay at the front and when I saw 1km I made the plan for the sprint.

“I hope if I have the legs like this I can also confirm my condition in the Tour de France,” he added, referring to MTN’s wildcard that will see them become the first African team to race the Tour.

The finish at Fraser’s Hill was not originally on the race route and was only included when the marquee climb to Genting Highlands was scrapped on the eve of race due to heavy machinery and construction work taking place there. Whereas the hors-categorie Genting is where the general classification of the Tour de Langkawi is usually contested between the pure climbers, Fraser’s Hill is shorter and gentler. The fact that Ewan and Andrea Guardini (Astana) were dropped suggests it was still tough enough to hurt the pure sprinters, and Reguigui pointed to his light weight and good legs as reasons for his success.

“It’s not an easy climb,” he insisted. “If you do 180km and you climb like this, it’s for sure not easy for everybody, but if you have the legs you have to go. I am a sprinter but I can also climb because I am 67kg.”

There was havoc at the start of the day as it emerged that a bout of food poisoning at the teams’ hotel had left multiple riders and staff under the weather or unable to take part. Three Astana riders - Andrey Zeits, Maxat Ayazbayev, Daniil Fominykh – didn’t turn up at the start line, nor did Sky’s Chris Sutton or Bardiani-CSF’s Simone Andreetta. MTN-Qhubeka were particularly badly afflicted, with Daniel Teklehaimanot pulling out while Merhawi Kudus and Natnael Berhane raced but were also sick, the former abandoning part-way through the stage.

“I say thanks to my team because today two guys stopped the race, so there was lots of stress because Daniel and Kudus we have sick, so it was difficult to make a decision for the stage,” said Reguigui.

“Tomorrow I think Astana and Orica-GreenEdge will control the race because they have the best sprinters in the peloton. I won’t make any risks for the sprint – I will try to keep the jersey.”

Given the nature of the climb, it was wondered before the stage whether Ewan would be able to hang onto his race lead. It wasn’t to be in the end but he insisted he had no regrets despite the fact that a fellow sprinter took the spoils.

“Up the first climb [the second-category Genting Sempah at 80km] I didn’t feel great at all I almost got dropped,” said the 20-year-old Australian. “Even through the middle part between the two climbs I was really suffering so I knew going into that last climb I wouldn’t have the legs. I tried to hang in there for as long as possible, but it was too hard for me today.”

How it unfolded

The day’s main breakaway formed at about the 14km mark and was made up of Francesco Chicchi (Androni-Giocattoli-Venezuela), Liam Bertazzo (Southeast), Sung Baek Park (KSPO) and Zulkifle Nik Azwan (National Sports Council Malaysia). They opened up a lead of over seven minutes as they made their way across the rolling hills out of Shah Alam towards the highlands.

The picturesque category-two climb of Genting Sempah came after 70km and saw the breakaway rise into the jungle with their lead diminishing as Sky and Colombia headed the peloton. Between the two climbs, and with the gap falling fast, Bertazzo chanced his luck and went solo, leaving his companions to be swallowed up by the pack.

He was caught a halfway up Fraser’s Hill and Sky went about setting a fierce pace on the front as the gradients increased and the roads narrowed in the final 7km.

Behind the bunch, Southeast’s Jakub Mareczko and Andrea Dal Col, who had both been affected by sickness, just focused on getting themselves to the finish, while another sufferer Ahmad Kamal Ameen (Malaysia) was forced into the broom wagon.

At the front, Pieter Weening (Orica) showed some interest in the final couple of kilometres and Sky were lining up Henao but it proved to be Reguigui, with the sprinter’s legs, who had the strongest kick.
