inCycle video: Nibali looks to fight for 2014 Tour de France

Italian aims to match Froome in the mountains

Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) is aiming to complete his collection of Grand Tour victories with the Tour de France, this July.

Nibali has been struggling to match his fellow Tour de France contenders. His lack of form hasn’t gone unnoticed, with his boss Alexandr Vinokourov sending him a letter and telling him to get his stuff together. Nibali is still pushing hard and will throw everything at his Tour bid.

“I want to fight for it, win it day by day if possible. I’ve lost other races, finishing second or third, with lots of honour and no regrets,” he told InCycle in an exclusive interview.

Nibali finished third in the 2012 edition of the race, behind Sky teammates Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome. The Italian must beat Froome this year, along with many others, if he wants to take the title.

“It is hard to say what is needed to beat him,” Nibali says of Froome. “During the Tour he showed that he is the best climber so you have to try and match his performance uphill. It is quite hard to match him uphill. Once you match his performance uphill you can try to employ some other tactics to “screw him over” so to speak.”
