Can the big sprinters be foiled once more at Milan-San Remo?

Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-QuickStep) has been on a winning streak this March, but the Frenchman claimed the biggest victory of his career so far at Milan-San Remo. Oliver Naesen (AG2R La Mondiale) could also boast a career-best result with his first monument podium, with former winner Michal Kwiatkowski (Team Sky) rounding out the podium. 

Alaphilippe capitalised on a commanding performance from his team and forced himself into the race winning move on the Poggio. The Frenchman was in strong company, however, with Matteo Trentin (Mitchelton-Scott), Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) among a select group that went clear on the final climb of the day. 

Despite a number of attacks in the run from the Poggio to the finish line on the Via Roma, it would come down to small group sprint. Given the company, Alaphilippe wasn't the favourite but he held firm and won by a clear margin to take the first Monument of his career.
