Dutch rider Woestenberg wins from breakaway

Peter Woestenberg (Global Cycling Team) won the Vuelta a Cuba’s sixth stage, sprinting to victory from a successful breakaway group. The surviving breakaway riders fractured into two groups over the closing kilometres but despite finishing in the second group Cuba’s Vicente Sanabria (Matanzas) gained enough time to take the general classification lead.

The opening 30 kilometres of racing were fast, with the peloton not allowing a breakaway to form. A fall involving several riders occurred during this section of the race, leaving Colombian Stiver Ortiz with a fractured right collarbone.

A group wasn’t allowed away until just before half way in the 113km stage. When a group finally formed it included Woestenberg, team-mate Tim Nederlof and five Cuban riders.

While the advantage had grown to two minutes, it was brought back to 1:19 minutes by race end. With both Woestenberg and Nederlof in the lead group of three, Cuban Pedro Sibila (Universidad Del Depo) was forced to settle for third in the final sprint.
