Cavendish and Armstrong headline Tour of Ireland in 2009
While the Tour of Ireland has been reduced from five days to three this year, the line-up for the 2009 race has shaped to be the best yet in the three-year history of the re-launched event. Ten-time Tour de France stage winner Mark Cavendish (Columbia HTC), seven-time Tour champion Lance Armstrong (Astana) and a host of other big names will this week compete in the Irish event, which appears to be punching well above its ranking as a 2.1 national tour. - Mr. Consistent: Russell Downing (CandiTV – Marshalls Pasta) also took victory in the Points Competition.
- Miss Stacey Kelly, daughter of cycling great Sean Kelly, presented Matt Wilson (Team Type 1) with his King of the Mountains jersey. Miss Kelly was assisted during the ceremony by Mr. Pat McQuaid, a person of some standing in Irish cycling circles by all accounts.
- Breschel was well entitled to smile after a successful few days racing on the 2009 Tour of Ireland.
- Third place on Stage 3 was enough to see Matti Breschel (Team Saxo Bank) don the white jersey of Best Placed U-25 Rider overall.
- Winner of Stage 3 into Cork City, Lars Petter Nordhaug (Joker Bianchi) is congratulated on the podium.
- Russell Downing lands back to earth and starts dealing with the media after Stage 3 of the 2009 Tour of Ireland.
- Manager of the CandiTV – Marshalls Pasta team Phil Griffiths was thrilled with Downing’s win.
- Well wishers and quote hunters huddled around Downing as he took a few minutes to compose himself and take it all in.
- A few minutes of recuperation time were required after the battle royale was over.
