When Wout van Aert sprinted past Tadej Pogačar in the Roubaix velodrome to claim one of cycling's most popular victories in recent years, the watching world rightly focussed on Van Aert himself, while his Cervélo bike gained plaudits too.

But beneath the Belgian, quietly doing its job, was a saddle unlike any that had come before it. The Prologo Choice is not simply a new model that slightly improves upon its predecessor, it is a product that revolutionises its category: the world's first fully integrated road saddle, with a modular design and aero credentials.

For Prologo, Van Aert's win in the Hell of the North was more than a sporting triumph. It was a live, unfiltered proof of concept, delivered across 258 kilometres of brutal French roads. If a saddle can survive and perform at the very highest level on Roubaix's notorious pavé, it can perform anywhere.

Engineered for the modern peloton

Prologo as a brand isn't afraid of challenging convention. The original Choice saddle, launched back in 2007, was the first interchangeable saddle the market had ever seen.

It gave riders choice in how they configured and personalised their setup. That level of innovation has never left the brand, and today the Choice name returns with a new focus.

It is borne out of Prologo's work developing the Predator 01TT saddle, the brand's innovative TT saddle that proved saddles could be engineered with aerodynamics at their core, rather than as an afterthought.

Naturally, that saddle was focussed on time trialling and triathlon, where aero gains can be most effective, but Prologo then applied the same thinking to a road racing saddle, and the Choice was born.

Modern road cycling has increasingly borrowed from motorsport – primarily Formula One – in its obsession with aerodynamic efficiency and systems-level thinking, and Prologo has embraced this fully.

The Choice is not a standalone component to be dropped onto a seatpost and forgotten about. It is designed as part of a total system, comprising rider, saddle, and bike. A system where every surface contributes to the overall aerodynamic performance.

For example, the shape of the Choice has been developed using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation software before being refined in the wind tunnel, ensuring an aerodynamic efficiency that has never been attempted in a road saddle before.

Alongside this, Prologo utilised its Pressure Map MyOwn system – a clever pressure-mapping technology also used by WorldTour teams – to refine the ergonomic profile of the saddle. The result is a compact, semi-round T-shape (available in 140mm and 147mm widths) that weighs as little as 152 grams.

Combined with a latest-generation variable-density foam construction, the Choice delivers the precise balance between comfort and performance that the demands of modern racing require, no matter if you're chasing a summit finish in the Alps or surviving the brutality of a cobbled classic.

Aerodynamic integration

Prologo says the saddle is the 'first ever integrated road saddle', but what does that mean?

On any conventional saddle, the two rails, which are gripped by the saddle clamp to hold the saddle in situ, sit exposed beneath the shell that houses the foam and onto which you sit. They protrude into the airflow and create drag that, at racing speeds, is both measurable and entirely avoidable.

Prologo has eliminated this problem entirely.

The Choice features its Nack (nano carbon fibre) rail that is completely concealed by two carbon 'wings' on either side. These shield the frontal airflow and channel it cleanly toward the rear of the saddle, also smoothing turbulent airflow off the rider's legs.

Not only does this dramatically reduce the aerodynamic drag of the rider-bike system, it also looks significantly cleaner and smoother. While other saddles look like components added to a bicycle, the Choice looks integrated. It looks like it belongs.

What's more, by optimising the connection between the rail and the base and by reducing the stack height of the saddle, Prologo's engineers have found stiffness where previously thought impossible, meaning it takes less carbon – and thus a lower weight – to achieve the optimal connection to the road.

Van Aert's ability to power across pavé with absolute authority at Paris-Roubaix did not happen by accident. Every component beneath him had to perform, and the Choice delivered.

Modular, sustainable, future-proof

There is one more feature that sets the Choice apart from anything else currently available in the high-end saddle market, and it's one that bears resemblance to its forebears from 2007. The Choice is modular.

Through a simple two-screw mechanism, the Nack rail can be completely separated from the carbon fibre shell, meaning that in the event of damage to either part – a crash impact on the rail, for example, or wear on the shell – said part can be replaced rather than the entire saddle thrown in the bin.

In a world where components are getting evermore expensive, this will be music to the ears of riders, with lower long-term cost of ownership, less waste for the environment, and an even more sustainable sport.

Importantly, this modularity is achieved without any compromise to the saddle's comfort, support, aero performance or structural integrity. It's not a trade-off; it's performance engineering with the needs of the customer in mind.

Van Aert's Paris-Roubaix victory will be remembered for many things. His tactical nous, the finish-line embrace with his children, the tears in the mixed zone, and his recovery from much adversity.

But for Prologo – and indeed those of us who care about the quiet revolutions hiding in plain sight – it will also be remembered as the day the road saddle finally caught up with the rest of the bike's eternal pursuit of marginal gains. The Prologo Choice has arrived.
