Italian Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas) gave an indication of his form ahead of the Tour de France with victory in the Giro dell'Appennino Wednesday. He attacked from nearly 50 kilometres out to win the race solo in Pontedecimo, Italy, 47 seconds ahead of Leonardo Bertagnolli (Diquigiovanni) and Marco Marzano (Lampre-NGC).
I have tried a similar action other times this season, but until now I was not able to pull off the win," said Nibali.
He dedicated the win to his grandmother, Carmela. She died in April when Nibali was at Spain's País Vasco stage race.
