Rick, son of Erik, wins again in Germany
Rik Zabel, son of former professional Erik Zabel won the U19 version of Rund um den Finanzplatz Eschborn-Frankfurt, a race his father won three times when it was known as Rund um den Henninger Turm.
Zabel, who rides for Team Thüringen, won the race not in a sprint, as his father did, but in a solo effort. He finished seven seconds ahead of Mike-Aaron Egger (Team Rothaus), with Maximilian Schachmann of Alfred-Lippert-Team Berlin coming in third, at 40 seconds.
It was the young Zabel's second major win within six days. On Easter Monday he won Rund um Köln.
“Winning the two most important German junior races in Köln and Frankfurt within a week is a great thing,” he told Radsport-News.com. “For me it is almost like a world championship.”
One of the first to congratulate him afterwards was his father, who rode in the team car following his son. “I never did that, winning Köln and Frankfurt in one year,” said the proud father. “I salute him.”
