Quick-Step Floors put on a master class in Classics racing at E3 Harelbeke, marking every move and sending two riders up the road to create an impossible tactical situation for their rivals.
Their push after La Houppe came just as a massive crash fractured the peloton, but it was the attack of Philippe Gilbert on the Taaienberg taht launched eventual winner Niki Terpstra and Yves Lampaert.
Although Lampaert was unable to stay with Terpstra, the Dutchman held off an elite chasing group with a remarkable 24km solo effort to win, while Gilbert out-sprinted a small group to make it a Quick-Step 1, 2. Greg Van Avermaet (BMC Racing) was third.
