Aiming to be number one

2011 will be the US brigade’s _irst meaningful foray into the Flanders Classics, with newly crowned World Champion Thor Hushovd as leader. He’ll be supported well as Martijn Maaskant and Johan Vansummeren are seasoned campaigners in northern France and Belgium while David Millar made a strong showing at the Tour of Flanders last year.

Fast finishers Heinrich Haussler and Tyler Farrar add even more depth to the Classics squad and the latter will contend the green jersey at the Tour. In July, the road may decide whether Christian Vande Velde or Ryder Hesjedal is GC leader in France, while Daniel Martin and Christophe Le Mével go to the Giro. With so many strong riders, team boss Jonathan Vaughters’s main problem might be ensuring this wealth of talent remains focused on clear goals.
