The burden of winning is on Boonen

Success for this squad will largely depend on Tom Boonen’s performance on the cobbles in April. He has the pedigree, having won Flanders twice and Roubaix three times, but had no answer to Fabian Cancellara’s blistering form last season. A persistent knee injury picked up at the Tour of California truncated his season. Sylvain Chavanel rescued the team’s season at the Tour and if he can replicate that form, it will be a job well done.

Stijn Devolder’s move to Vacansoleil – one of 12 departures – creates another rival for Boonen in the Classics. This could be offset, however, by the arrival of exciting cyclo-cross specialist Zdenek Štybar. Other acquisitions include the equally matched sprinters Gerald Ciolek and Francesco Chicchi. Quite what the pecking order is will be decided by the road.
