Joaquin Rodríguez is the jewel in the Katusha crown and dangerous over any terrain. The unexpected World number one in 2010 claimed the win in the Tour of Catalonia, finished second at Flèche Wallone, took a stage win at the Tour and finished fourth at the Vuelta. Vladimir Karpets is a consistent (if uninspiring) top 20 finisher in the Tour and Vuelta. Whether he can hit the heights of 2007, when he won the Tours of Switzerland and Catalonia, is questionable.
The team will head to the Classics with Filippo Pozzato at the head of a strong team that includes Leif Hoste, who was one of 11 pre-season acquisitions. Race winners in their own right, Serguei Ivanov and Alexandr Kolobnev should provide assistance in the hilly classics. However, the last minute signing of convicted doper Danilo Di Luca has marred the team’s image.
