Targeting the Classics and the grand tours
On paper, there is little to fault with the Lampre-ISD squad. Alessandro Petacchi, Damiano Cunego, Danilo Hondo and promising all-rounder Simon Špilak have all stayed put and have been joined by Michele Scarponi from Androni Giocattoli. The 37-year-old Petacchi won the
green jersey at the Tour last year and has a strong ambition to win Milan-San Remo. He is yet to escape persistent doping allegations which may catch up with him in 2011.
Cunego has eschewed grand tour ambitions in favour of Classics and stage wins, so expect to see him in the mix at the end of Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Tour of Lombardy, the latter which he has won three times. Scarponi, now 31, had a stellar 2010 season and finished fourth in the Giro. At the head of a stronger team, a podium spot at the Giro should be within reach.
