Experience fails to trump youth

In an ageing team, Johan Bruyneel’s quandary is choosing a stage race team leader. Levi Leipheimer and Andreas Klöden have race-craft but are both the wrong side of 35. Janez Brajkovic won the Critérium du Dauphiné ahead of Alberto Contador and, at 28, should be hitting peak condition, but it’s questionable whether he could lead the team in a
grand tour.

Given the context, youngsters Ben Hermans, Matt Busche, Ben King or Jesse Sergent could shine if they take the initiative. The collapse of Team Pegasus allowed Bruyneel to pick up the two Robbies – Hunter and McEwen – for the sprints.
