All change in Spain
Spanish telecommunications provider, Movistar, replaces Caisse d’Epargne in 2011 as the headline sponsor and there have been plenty of changes in the ranks too. Twelve riders are out, including Alejandro Valverde for doping and Christophe Moreau who retired. By far the biggest loss is week-long stage race specialist Luis León Sánchez to Rabobank – especially after he won the Clásica San Sebastián.
Spanish National Champion Iván Gutiérrez and David Arroyo, who unexpectedly found himself in the pink jersey at the Giro last year, have both re-signed. Look out for the return of late-blossoming Xavier Tondo, who won a stage of Paris-Nice last year and finished second at the Tour of Catalonia. After a creditable sixth at the Vuelta, pressure will be on the 32-year-old to deliver podium finishes for the team.
