Defending their grand tour wins
Liquigas secured an exceptional double in 2010 by winning both the Giro and the Vuelta – a feat that seems unlikely to be repeatable in 2011. Ivan Basso will have to roll over Andy Schleck at the Tour and Vincenzo Nibali is heading to the Giro, where his principal opponents could be former team-mate Roman Kreuziger at Astana or pure climbers Domenico Pozzovivo at Colnago-CSF.
If Peter Sagan builds on the form that brought him a brace of stages at Paris-Nice and the Tour of California, then he could trigger some exciting racing. He hasn’t had quite so meteoric a rise, but 22-year-old Elias Viviani won the Frank Vandenbroucke Memorial, the Marco Pantani Memorial and a stage of the Tour of Turkey. The team has also signed up Americans Timmy Duggan and Ted King.
