Last chance for Evans?
BMC Racing pulled off one of the coups of the winter by poaching Taylor Phinney from RadioShack’s feeder team, Trek LiveStrong. The 21-year-old rouleur has won a clutch of prestigious U23 titles, including the Junior Paris-Roubaix twice. In 2011, expect him to be learning from riders such as Alessandro Ballan and veteran George Hincapie, who is entering his 14th year as a professional.
Previous World Champion Cadel Evans’s chances of winning the Tour de France are dwindling and he has built 2011’s season around the race. He isn’t riding the Giro and must be hoping that the bad luck that ended in a broken elbow in 2010 does not strike again. Newcomer Greg Van Avermaet finished a creditable fifth at the Worlds and is improving. Look out too for Karsten Kroon finishing in the top ten at the hilly Classics in April.
