Please make a note of the large number of professional riders that began as
BMXers. You have BMX in the heading in your website, but your coverage is dismal.
The world’s greatest downhiller returns to her roots and wins the women’s gold
and it is a side note in your reporting.
The number of cyclists that began in BMX is unending. BMX is the foundation
of cycling in America. And yes, Virginia, I have a road bike and a mountain
bike and ride them both. But my BMX bike is a custom Yess frame build up that
took me to the ABA World Cup title in '99.

Jeez, when I proposed the Beige Jersey (because I thought it was funny) I didn't
know all you Aussies were such darn sensitive guys and gals. I don't know if
"Squeaky" Evans IS all the stuff one side says he is, or isn’t all the stuff
the other side says he ain’t, I just know the net result is, for much of the
cycle viewing world, is boring, unless he's your guy. I understand.
I used to root for an American football team (they use the pointy ball) team
that lost the Super Bowl four times. I rooted, I cheered, I loved them because
they were mine. They could be really boring too. Let's put this all behind us.
I'd be wiling to modify the jersey, maybe put light brown dots on it. Or how
about green and yellow stripes around the middle?

Welcome to Grassroots! I have been a member of USA Cycling for over thirty
years and I have seen very little improvement in licensing, upgrades, scheduling,
registration, result posting, promoter event registration, event insurance registration,
etc. How can USA Cycling be more like our European counterparts? By simply listening
to the demands of the riders and promoters, that’s how.

U-23 Championship road race fiasco
With regard to culture and appreciation of bike racing; I was racing in Spain
last year, and during one of the races that counts for the 'Overall Best Rider'
competition in the Basque Country a group of about 15-20 got 3 minute lead on
the rest of the then splintered peloton. I was in one of the first groups on
the road behind the leaders. After killing ourselves up this one climb, at the
top we were greeted by the police and officials telling us we were out of the
race. Needless to say, there was a very animated discussion between some of
the riders and the officials regarding why there was a '3 minute rule' in affect,
and why they didn’t just tell us at the bottom of the hill that we were out
of the race instead of waiting until the top.
Mysterious!

Therapeutic use exemptions - please explain
To Garth of Houston,
It's called exercise induced asthma. If my memory serves me correctly this
web site's very own Form & Fitness column dealt with the subject earlier this
year. Google it and then come back to us once you're educated.

Therapeutic use exemptions - please explain #2
I developed exercise induced asthma as a result of being a competitive cyclist
many years ago. I trained at professional level loads, and many weeks I would
ride between 25 and 42 hours a week of 'on the bike' time. Even though my career
is long over now, it's a legacy of my time spent pursuing this dream.
Just think about the amount of air being processed through the lungs, and then
think again about the pollution of the air in most places these days, the dryness,
etc. Imagine 5, 10, 15 years of this sort of thing. The pro peloton races on
the razor edge of illness constantly and much of the external impurities into
the blood stream must surely come through breathing such hot, dry, or impure
air.
Now most cyclists will breathe through both the nostrils and the mouth at the
same time, and ideally when filtering such a large volume of impure air, one
would want to breathe only through the nostrils, but as we all know this isn't
possible. If this were possible, it's likely you would see a lot less of these
TUE's around.

Phil Liggett encounter
In response to those saying the TdF commentary baton should be passed to the
next generation, it is the television production team that should be introduced
to the 21st century. Think about the amount of information provided by other
sports, even the basic stuff: competitor profiles (photo, age, team, history,
time with team etc), stats on that competitor's prior stage placing’ in that
event, interviews with the team 'coach' that can run during the not-so-interesting
bits, background pieces on tactics etc.
Even more, think about the cycle-specific stuff which would spark up the coverage:
heart rates, cadences, specific gear being used (as was available on the internet
this year), road gradient where they are currently riding, bike technology,
injury graphics, positions of all the riders of one team pointed out by GPS,
tactics; e.g. amount of times a rider is in the breakaway, on-bike/ helmet lipstick
cameras, interviews with riders while on the road, being able to listen in to
radio conversations between riders and team car. That wouldn't be a bad start.
Yes, some of this may be competitively sensitive information but if everybody
does it then they are all in the same boat. That may be the price to pay for
more people; casual watchers and the cognoscenti alike, watching for longer
more often and enjoying - and understanding - this great race more.

John Fahey and Jacques Rogge on doping
You may want to check your facts about track & field athletes not being tested
as often as cyclists. You're still hearing that drivel that Lance Armstrong
espoused during his reign. A journalist (can't remember name) exposed that track
& field athletes are tested about 20-30 times a year, that is roughly 2-2.5
times a month as opposed to the number of times that Lance was tested, considerably
fewer than what track and field athletes were tested over a year. So don't think
that just because there is a testing system in place in cycling versus track
and field that cycling is cleaner. After all, which sporting event exposed the
doping fiasco in sports first, the Tour or the Olympics? The Olympics in 1988
did it with Ben Johnson, surprise, surprise. Cycling exposed it in 1997 with
the Festina scandal.
Check your facts, Liam. Now, cycling MAY be the most tested sport with the
biological passport now but was it always? No.

Aussie Allan Davis?
I am a big fan of Allan Davis, I had heard of him before but I guess his 2nd
at the Australian Championships in (about) 2003 was where I thought that this
kid really has "it"... I think he may have even been an U23 rider at the time.
2nd at Milan Sanremo was one of those break through moments where his career
should have really ramped up, he should have been set to be our (Australia's)
O'Grady replacement.
Struggling this Australian summer with good form but trying to find a team
and doing some of those 6 day races, despite being unsuited, just to keep a
Euro presence has been rewarded with recent good form for Mitsubushi-Jartazi.
So I am glad he has shaken of the rubbish of the Puerto stuff (despite being
one of the few riders to actually have a hearing and being cleared long, long
ago by both Spanish and Australian Authorities) and is back on a good team from
next month. Though I do worry he will serve Boonen to his own cost, just like
many do for the top tier... even some who may belong there themselves...
The question I have is why, for the last 6 months or so when riding for Mitsubishi
has he been listed in the results as a Belgian rider? I understand that his
licence my be issued in Belgium, but that doesn't effect the nationality, indeed
to change nationality you must be clear of your old country (expressly international
representations) for a period of 5 years. Didn't Davis go to the worlds for
Australia last year?
Can anyone throw some light on why this is so, is it simply to suit Mitsubishi?

Pro cycling sponsorship
My question is simple but probably holds a complex answer. Why are some pro
teams, such as Gerolsteiner and Credit Agricole, struggling so much to find
title sponsors while teams like Garmin-Chipotle, Columbia, CSC-Saxo Bank, and
most notably Scott-American Beef seemed to find sponsors so much easier? On
a side note the announcement of American beef signing on to replace Saunier
Duval, seem incredibly quick, was Saunier Duval planning on leaving at the end
of the year and or did they see this as an opportunity to pull out following
the positive test from Ricco?
