DOPING - time to draw a line in the sand
No, like all of us ... I do not want Cheaters to win!
I want cycling to grow and excite and inspire for generations to come. I want to see tomorrow's youth wanting to win the Tours and the Classics. Young men and women looking to aspire to be like the Cadel Evans and Stephen Roche's of the cycling world.
The way it is going at the minute is tragic.. The fantastic sport is being dragged to the depths of an all time low by the organization who claims to represent it. The UCI should now have faith in the measures (DNA Passport) they are putting in place. And give the cycling image a "new" start.
Stop the witch hunt, or we will be reading about WADA beating at the doors of old cyclists from days gone past, even further back than Rasmussen, Mayo or Basso.
The Line in the Sand...
So some of the "Men in Black" have been destroyed, they have been caught, some in somewhat dubious circumstances, some have been punished others are waiting sentence.
It is time to allow Cycling to heal, I tend to use political examples, but in my country, the past is past, and like cycling there is nothing we can do about it.
But we can learn and make the future better.
Let's draw the line and start again with the knowledge we now have. We all make mistakes, cycling has made mistakes as we all know, but we should learn, grow and progress!
Head in the sand...no!
Head in the air...yes!
The current authorities need to "draw the line in the sand" and put their weight fully behind the preventative measures they have put in place and tell the press with confidence "this is a new start" There will always be cheats, Operation Puerto, now Vienna tomorrow, who knows?
UCI Tell the world - today ... we have put in place "the beginning"
Cycling is not just sport it is a way of life.

Lance is the best of all time
Look at the podium from the 2005 Tour de France.
Lance asked us to believe in cycling, in the great riders at his side. Well, Ulrich and Basso seem to have been knee-deep in the doping thing. So before all the latest doping stuff came to light, at the time we said, "Wow, Lance is so much better than everyone else." Now, do we say, "Wow, Lance was really, really better than everyone else! The 2nd and 3rd best riders doped and Lance, who always rode clean, handily won his 7th Tour."
The best also-rans doped. Why are we not emphatically calling Lance the greatest rider of all time? Lance does have his hand over his heart in the picture.

Readers poll: best stage races 2007
I am blown away by these results; the Tour of Califorina #3 in the best stage race? A race in which whoever wins the TT wins the overall. A race which has no stage that anyone can make time up in, because its not hard or steep enough to drop anyone. They must not follow world cycling. Where is the Deutschland-Tour, Tour of Romandie, Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco? The T.o.C. over the Criterium du Dauphine Libere? What are these people thinking? What next The Univest Grand Prix over The Ronde van Vlaanderen?

Rock racing
Is it really true that there is no such thing as bad publicity? Time will tell. The recent series of articles, letters, feedback and water cooler talk involving Rock Racing and Michael Ball may be nothing more than an imitation of Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean.
When confronted with "You are the worst pirate I have ever heard of," Jack's retorts: "But you HAVE heard of me."
Maybe Mr. Ball watched this movie too many time while developing his recent publicity campaign. Make no mistake about it, not matter how you see the Rock Racing / Michael Ball stuff that is going on right now, we are talking about all things Rock Racing. Interesting.

Speaking about Lance
It may be true that Lance never tested positive during his career, but there were those retrospective tests that found EPO in his samples from the 1999 Tour. And then it was all "the French are out to get me", "why were these tests done", and "who leaked the information". There was a huge smokescreen about the witch hunt and conspiracy, and very little was said about the fact that the samples were his, and that they contained EPO.
Richard Virenque did not test positive.
Bjarne Riis did not test positive.
Jan Ullrich did not test positive (except recreationally).
Ivan Basso did not test positive.
The dopers have been ahead of the testers for many years. The real progress is being made by investigative and judicial action such as Puerto. It would appear that the riders involved there have managed to avoid being caught out by testers. So it is not enough in this current atmosphere to simply not test positive when there are suspicions about individual riders (Rasmussen anyone?).
No smoke without fire.

Speaking about Lance #2
Yeah good call bud! Maybe you should read your cycling history a bit more and find out about how in the past certain doping practices were not able to be detected.
I do not fall into the category of people who believes every rider who wins is a doper, but read your history and The Cannibal was caught for doping and was sanctioned and quite rightly. But if he were caught today the history books would be quite different. Who visited Landis the day before his dope win in the TDF?
Lance may not have been caught for doping but back in his day several doping practices, and in particular blood doping practices were undetectable. Just have a look at a particular incident when Jay Leno asked Lance about his performances and those he beat who were dopers. It is not factual but it does cast quite a pall over some of his 'feats'. Further if there was no doping in Lances team 1) why did Vino choose to use the same Dr and the same personal body guard in the '07 TDF. 2) have a look at the number of ex Postal/Disco riders who have been sprung for doping. 3) Just look at the marvel kid Contador, implicated lots and the only one who could really stick with The Chicken. A rider who was dropped by Riis and then finally sprung for obviously bending the rules in order that he would not get sprung. Can you tell me Brunyeel knew nothing of what had and was going on? 4) Why did Disco choose to cut and run when they were on the crest of a potential long winning wave with the likes of Levi and Contador? I reckon if you knew that at some stage the truth would be revealed you would cut and run also.
In summary Lance WAS an amazing athlete and EM was just a cannibal but after decades of almost entrenched doping I think it is good for a younger generation to question and evan aim to better the feats of so called squeaky clean athletes. History may not drag out the truth of many doping practices but I hope this current hyper-questioning in the world of cycling leads to a generation of clean and mean cyclists.
P.S. All those Cadel doubters just watch this space he is set for really big things this season!

I hope that the new blood passports will help to end these type of discussions. Unfortunately, by allowing a maximum level of any physiological measurement cycling (or any other sport for that matter) leaves the door open for abuse of those levels.

Toyota-United abusing USAC team rules? #2
Ummmm, why don't we wait until the season starts? Yeah they hired a BMXer, but former BMXer's make some of the best criterium racers I have ever seen. I am a pure roadie so I am not trying to defend my own "kin", only stating a fact. Additionally if you are going to complain about them, what about Selker? His best results have been on the track not as a Cat 1 roadie, and lets complain about Jelly Belly who gave a home to a MTBer/Cyclocrosser in Todd Wells. There are other perfect examples out there.
Additionally Toyota United may have hired them for various non-road racing events. First they wouldn't be the first team, to have riders enter non-road events, maybe to save money (don't need a whole different team structure since they hired privateers anyway) and maximize exposure they hired guys to race their discipline. Simply look at the number of riders they have vs. the rest of the US Conti teams.
Toyota United:23, Toshiba AEG:16, Team Type 1:15, Time Pro Cycling:12, Successful Living:13, Rock Racing:14 (confirmed), Rite Aid:11, Kelly benefits:13, Jittery Joe:11, Jelly Belly:12, Even perennial power house Health-Net only has 12 and Colavita 13. Even Slip Stream a Pro-Conti team racing in the US AND Europe has only 23 odd racers.
Looking at the above numbers its pretty clear Toyota United couldn't possibly justify having 23 riders only for Road racing. While it would be nice they are only a Conti team not a Pro-Conti team, with the budget to match. Now I will subtract the 3 you complain about. Out of the remaining 20, 8 are not native North Americans. Toshiba has 5 non-Norths, Type 1: 7, Joe's 4, Colavita has 6. Toyota isn't off the mark in any statistically significant way here either when you look at the break down. Heck by ratio you should be complaining more about Team Type 1, and simply the number of North Americans they have on board is more or the same as other COMPLETE teams.
Cycling goes beyond the road my Friend. We should be thanking the Toyota for Sponsoring the Team and saying "hey, if you want 3 guys for other things, 20 racers is pretty good as is 12 Americans.

I actually have no idea what potential controversy you are writing about, but I'm thoroughly disgusted by your dismissal of downhill and BMX racers. I have no information about the situation you are referring to, but to dismiss downhill and BMX racers in the manner you have is indicative of a closed mind that deals with perceptions rather than objective facts. The level of endurance, pedaling skills, and bike handling involved in pro level downhill mtb and BMX riding these days is beyond belief. You clearly have no respect for these athletes and not a clue as to what it takes to compete at their level.
My suggestion to you is to do a little research on the downhill and BMX talents of the following BICYCLE racers: Sven Nys (8 times national BMX champion), Robbie McEwen (national BMX champion), John Tomac (national BMX champion, nation downhill champion, national xc mtb champion, a few second places in world cup downhill, a few first places in world cup xc mtb, nation criterium champion, part of winning national team time trial championship team, raced in Paris-Roubaix, raced in Giro). Man, that's just 3 people you might have heard of and I'm so bored trying to refute such a closed mined opinion. I presented facts and researched palmares.
You dismiss forthcoming statements from a team as "spin" while all you presented is an opinion. You mention Riffle and Shanbag in an incoherent sentence that I won't try to refute, except to say that Shanbag has basically unlimited talent and drive while not acting like he "deserves" anything. Riffle is well known to be extremely PROFESSIONAL and has exceptional endurance abilities.
When I say exceptional you should realize that many world cup level downhill racers have endurance abilities equal to a USA cat. 1 rider. I would not be surprised if Riffle has the current ability to compete in elite road events. Maybe if you researched the lack of serious doping issues in downhill racing and how Riffle became this years national downhill champion, you might realize why a team would look beyond the world of "deserving" close minded, cry-baby "road" racers to find their professional bicycle racers.
