The Crocodile Trophy
Marc Herremans' achievement at the 2007 Crocodile Trophy is beyond amazing. To have ridden 1400 km across the Australian Outback is a feat in and of itself, but to do it on a hand-cycle? I am truly at a loss for words. In my mind, Herremans exemplifies the human spirit at its best; struggling through even when it was his third twelve plus hour day in a row. He earns my respect, and I'm sure the respect of all other cyclists in the world, no matter what type of bike they choose to put between their legs.
Herremans is and inspiration to us all, pushing us to overcome our greatest fears, demons, and physical ailments and be the best we can be in all aspects of life. Marc Herremans, I salute you. I would be honoured to ride with you anytime, anywhere.

A little bit of bias here?
Just under a year ago Cyclingnews reported Armstrong beats NYC marathon goal: Competing in his first running marathon, Lance Armstrong finished the New York City Marathon on Sunday in with an unofficial time of 2:59:37, under his goal of finishing within one hour of the winner - According to the Associated Press - although he was paced by three elite-level marathoners provided by sponsor Nike, the seven-time Tour de France champion struggled at times to stay on a 3-hour pace, but - as he has so many times in cycling - found the energy to meet the challenge. Other media outlets reported Lance (856th overall) as saying "without a doubt the hardest physical thing I have ever done."
No wonder Laurent Jalabert's marathon time of 3:10:08 a couple of weekends back did not rate a mention in the cycling press. Examined in its context, Jaja's effort is not too bad for a guy who was two years older than Lance was on race day. Oh, by the way, Jalabert had just completed 3.8km in the ocean (1:15:40) then 180 clicks on the bike (4:45:49), before he hit the bitumen on two legs. It's called the Hawaii Ironman and Jaja did it on Saturday for fun: 9:19:58 total elapsed time and 76th place overall! So, why isn't that news, even for cycling fans - especially when Lance gets another look in on November 5 "Armstrong betters marathon time"? To an even-handed reader, this looks just a tinge biased.

Rider's passport
I see a variety of people seem to believe that the idea of a rider "passport" is a good idea. The fact is that these same people would be outraged if their own employers demanded to draw blood and urine at regular intervals.
Doping is a serious problem in cycling and we need to find a way to fight it and the idea behind it that winning at any cost is preferable regardless of the dishonour of cheating.
But using what is little more than Stalinist tactics exacerbates the problem since such things discourages real men from riding in professional races. I think we need more people like Armstrong and fewer like Sinkewitz.
Or am I simply forgetting that there are a significant number of people who claim that the fact that Armstrong never tested positive proves that he was?

If he and his lawyers win this case why would anyone bother following this sport or any other sport? This would give every rider a license to dope and cheat. He appears to be a selfish, cheater who is only looking our for himself and has no interest in the history, continuance or integrity of this great sport.

Positive tests
With regards to Mr. Demertzis letter on October 27th about positive doping tests and his assertion that he doesn't see how an "incompetent" lab could produce results which show a substance that was not there, he might want to look again at the Landis positive tests. It was clearly pointed out that the LNDD did in fact measure substances that were not there on a number of occasions. If Mr. Demertzis has not reviewed the lab documents, and is wondering how I or anyone else who has studied them knows this, basically there are several instances during the testing that the LNDD did NOT add baseline substances that are used for reference points yet measured those substances anyway. Thankfully, because of Floyd Landis, this is all public information that any of us can consume should we choose to do so.

Drug testing procedures
I cannot help but notice that the defender of the lab is French. Even the most unbiased observer has to be at the point now that the results being "positively" identified at Châtenay-Malabry are suspect. There has just been too much evidence produced [including by the lab technicians themselves] that the testing procedure leaves a lot to be desired.
And this perception is not assisted by idiotic statements from persons in the form of Gripper stating "the Gent laboratory just couldn't get the sample to confirm the Paris result." This clearly indicates one of two things-that the French Lab is given designated results prior to the testing and make their results conform OR all other labs but the French one are incompetent.
Maybe it is time for cycling as we know it today to die. Let a clean form of the sport rise from the ashes, with new guidelines, riders, sponsors, fans, and future. What has come before is tainted, outdated, corrupt, and simply not believable.

Marco Pinotti: Engineering a new path
I enjoyed your article on Marco Pinotti.
It reminded me that Marco Pinotti was the only pro cyclist that actually wrote in to Cyclingnews to say, "Look, not every pro is doping! I'm clean."
The fact he is willing to personally put this out there says a lot about him.
I'm glad he will ride the time trials with the tricolour jersey of his country. He deserves it.

Bike design originality
I completely agree with Mr. Trimble's sentiments. Although I have not, nor most likely ever will, have to deal with the UCI's design regulations, some of them seem downright reactionary. I do not understand why they outlawed Levi Leipheimer time trial bar position. If someone can give me a logical reason I will surely accept it but until then... Other rules like the 3-tube rule need to be updated as they do not make sense either. So what if a rider, riding a full monocoque frame has an aerodynamic advantage over a rider with a more traditional frame. Isn't the point of the sport to have the rider be the limiting factor in the race not the bike? Shouldn't that what bike racing be all about, testing the abilities of the riders? I believe that riders should be allowed to ride what they want as long as it is safe (the 6.8kg minimum weight limit is about the only rule that makes sense to me). This would further the technology of the sport, which is what we all want.
