Anquetil

Following Les Woodland's Jacques Anquetil article and Geoffrey White and Liz Cochrane's letters in response, I would like to add two points.

First, Liz is right that there will be a book coming out next year - my biography of Anquetil 'Sex, Lies and Handlebar Tape' will be published by Mainstream Publishing in the UK in April. Why the racy title? Because of his 'unique' domestic arrangements to which Liz and Les both refer. What does unique mean? It means he not only seduced his doctor's wife, he also then had a child with her daughter from her first marriage, maintained a menage a trois with his wife and her daughter for twelve years, and then had a son with the ex-wife of his step-son (are you keeping up?!?). As his daughter, Sophie, his wife Jeanine, and his second companion all told me, it's not possible to understand Anquetil the cyclist without also understanding Anquetil the man - and vice versa.

The second point is that Geoffrey is right to question the assertion by Les that Anquetil was dull. Consider the reaction of Poulidor himself. When I met him for my book, he told me that Anquetil was unfairly remembered solely for his time-trialling prowess and that this detracted from the rest of his achievements. 'Even if they had removed all the time trials from the Tour de France he would have still have won,' he insisted. In reality, dull is an epithet most frequently applied to those who win a lot, often by those who resent such success. Anquetil may not have possessed the attacking panache of Merckx, Coppi or Hinault, but surely his role in contributing to what is often referred to as 'cycling's golden age' should inure him from being described as dull.

Mayo's B sample to get B test

I must say that I totally agree with Joel's point of view in regard to testing procedures practiced in cycling lately. I am a firm believer of the idea that professional cyclists today are no more "dirty" than their predecessors or any other professionals involved in highly competitive sports. Shouldn't we awaken to the reality and admit that sport has become a very profitable business where the most successful individuals earn more that some of the best CEO. Haven't we evolved and adapted the De Coubertin's dream to our own reality?

As an ex-cyclist and father I'm more concerned about the possibility of my son being hit by a drunk driver than his potential involvement in doping. Of course that cheating is ugly and unethical but what is even more disgusting is the attitude of organizations like UCI and ASO trying to protect their goldmines. Aren't these hypocrites running the "business" the real source of problem? They have politicized cycling with style that sometimes reminds me of Nazi attitudes. I wonder how it is possible that a pointing finger of authorities can destroy destinies of sportsmen, the real substance of sport. How far will we go in our pursuit of cleanness, good image and sponsor's purses?

Stefano Zanini

"An advocate of the world anti-doping movements, Zanini grew as an athlete alongside the continual changes being implemented"

Wasn't Zanini suspended for doping. Why was this neglected from your article? Zanini is part of the old guard. Lets make room for the new riders.

Rider's passport

No I'd be too devastated that I'd done something downright stupid to even contemplate putting myself in that position, never mind thinking about running to this authority to appeal or that authority to counter appeal. Let's remember, I AM RESPONSIBLE for everything that is ingested into my body, food liquid, medicines, drugs, hormone replacements etc etc. I have the choice to do this whether it is legal or illegal in terms of the rules of the sport. Our Pros have the same choices to make, ultimately THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE for what they ingest not some doctor, prepatore or anyone else who can get you the right stuff.

As David Millar said on another website recently."He visited the room of an elder rider on his team, he knew he would be offered doping products and was sure he was going to refuse...when he left he had changed his mind". That's called making a choice, speaking out is taking the responsibility for doing something stupid, fighting against the dopers in his case is repaying the humiliation of getting caught and slapped with a ban.

Doping is about responsibility. Being responsible enough to make the choice not to, being responsible enough to admit your crass stupidity if you do and get caught and accept the humiliation and the ban, being responsible enough to drop the muppets who supplied you in the mire as well.

Our professional sportsmen and women show on an all too regular basis that they are not responsible enough to make the right choices therefore the governing bodies have to take that responsibility out of their hands. I agree with the comment that the rules makers need to be clear what they are doing and ensure that the testing labs are the best at what they do but in the end it's down to you, me and Joe Blogs pro athlete to determine what we put in our bodies.

Rider's passport #2

Sure the testing may have begun in earnest with Tom Simpson's death, but the modern program began with WADA and their forced enlisting of cycling into their fold.

WADA obviously needs its own set of checks and balances, and the lab system needs to revert to private industry who will do the tests faster and better, with the runner- up bidding lab doing the B sample.

WADA and drugs in cycling are not going away, but the sport needs new guidelines for both cycling and the testers to return this to a more human era where each region of cyclists is monitored by a local tester, and those living isolated could be checked by a local physician under contract, who would test at a reasonable time, (not 2am).

Testers, (vampires), would travel the race circuit with the riders, both ProTour and continental, and, like podium girls, be cute enough to date. This might alleviate the confrontational nature of doping controls and return the sport to a human level.

Betting

Here's perhaps a really stupid question, but I haven't seen it brought up or discussed. Why is it that Unibet.com had such a terrible time last year being banned from almost all the major events, allegedly because it represents betting or gambling and that is not something with which the societies want to be associated with?

My question then is why has a team with a sponsorship such as a lottery been allowed to participate with seemingly no turbulence whatsoever? Is it not also gambling? Is it sanctioned since it is in the name of a national lottery instead of a private corporation? Why has Predictor/Lotto been allowed to race? What is deemed the difference?

Thanks

Jonathan Page

Is Jonathan Page kidding? "Page had a terrible start and explained before the race that he wasn't expecting to be back in form right away, after the recent problems with team management".

He's under stress because his team which provides cash and a motor home expects results? Does he know what pro cycling is about?

How many riders would kill for his position?

And then he uses the fact that he's under stress from the team to perform as a reason he doesn't perform.

Wake up!!

Good for Deutsche Telekom and Discovery! The pro riders have to understand that it is now officially more lucrative to ride clean than dirty!

The sponsors can move to another sport very easily and they will. The two largest teams are essentially gone so unless you happen to like living on bread and water you just have to stop.

It's not good enough to repent after doping, or doing drugs, just don't do it! The idiots that confessed should have the record expunged and should return all the money too. If you are caught like Sinkewitz or Floyd then you should lose your right to compete as a pro. Its over, you're done, good bye! Surely we are past the point of being lenient on this stuff.

Strewth! What a bunch of idiots pros are and what a bunch of idiots we are for not holding them responsible for drug use!

Well DT and Disco are gone and we are all the poorer. We can go back to our regular jobs or switch sports to watch, but what are the pros going to do?

Bag groceries? Flip burgers? Rickshaw taxi's? I guess we will find out and so will they!

Pay attention as the final last lap bell is ringing!

T-Mobile drop out

I have been a (Flemish) supporter of Team Telekom and then Team T-Mobile almost from the very start. I feel extremely disappointed by the main sponsor's decision to throw in the towel at this crucial moment. It proves that the Germans lack a longstanding cycling culture compared to ours, the French and the Italian. For as long as they had those individual stars like Ullrich, Riis and Zabel, both media and business were quick to join the successes and capitalize on the unbelievable boom of cycling in Germany.

But look at them now: a few (expected) scandals are being totally blown out of proportion and the dominos start falling. Because of lack of long term vision, the sponsors start to panic and decide to pull the plug, and not just on one team, because this will have a disastrous effect on the whole of German cycling. They simply lack the bigger historical context which is necessary to put things into perspective and can help in finding solutions, rather than focussing on extra problems... Team Wiesenhof and T-Mobile are dead and buried, while Gerolsteiner are being kept alive for just one more season. Which means that, by next year this time, German top level cycling will have ceased to exist!

Bike design originality

"This works well in America for NASCAR because in the end it comes down to who is the best driver. I know, I know, they still have to pedal the bikes, but some racers start out several pedal strokes ahead under the current system."

Are you kidding? The teams that win are the teams with the most cash. Ask any driver at the back of the field and he will tell you he needs one run up front and he'll say "cash".
