Dede Demet-Barry wins on top of the world in Montreal

The World Cup Series made its sixth stop in Montreal today. Held on the infamous Mount Royale, the course challenged even the best of climbers. With only seven points separating Saturn's Petra Rossner and Dutchwoman Mirjam Melchers, the spectators lining the slopes of the mountain had plenty to keep them entertained, as Melchers and the determined Saturn rider fought it out for the cherished rainbow leader's jersey. In the end it was a surprise winner, Dede Demet-Barry, stunning all - the fans, the peloton, and herself.
The 99 kilometer race was held on an eight kilometer loop, which the athletes completed thirteen times. Noted as a climbers course, the ascent up Mount Royale is unrelenting, coming after very little recovery, over and over and over again.
Frequently a race of attrition even for the best of climbers, today's race was no different. With local heroines, Lyne Bessette and Genevieve Jeanson capturing the intensity of the tifosi and media frenzy, the focus of all was on those two riders, leaving an opportunity for a cagey and wise rider to scoop the win.
Although the Rona Team rode a very hard tempo the first three laps, the main group remained at thirty riders. Many individual riders took their turns, attacking the bunch, but were marked closely by Bessette and Jeanson, and did not get far. Both Bessette and Jeanson attempted to force a break on the climb but on the descent the riders would regroup, only to return to the ascent as a unit once again.
However, at the bell lap, Saturn's Anna Millward and TalgoAmerica.com's Dede Demet-Barry were dropped from what was left of the group. Chasing back on after the descent, they both saw the same opportunity from different sides of the peloton and attacked, coming out together 30 meters ahead, with a substantial gap on the unsuspecting group and surprising each other.
They quickly organized themselves and began working together. The group hesitated and the time gap began to open until the twosome had 1'20" at the bottom of the climb. From there, Demet-Barry was able to climb away from Saturn's Millward, gradually putting seconds into the Australian.
Demet-Barry finished solo, around 12 seconds ahead of Millward, hands raised in the air - a glorious win in the sun on top of the mountain and a big smile of both happiness of returning to a sport she loves and still excels at. Millward also came across with obvious delight at finishing second in such a difficult race.
Back on the slopes of the mountain, Jeanson wound it up in the final meters, taking third from Mirjam Melchers. However, while the race for the win was already decided, the battle for the coveted World Cup jersey was also being played out. Saturn's Petra Rossner continued to dig deep, relentless in her pursuit of World Cup points, finishing an impressive twelfth. Rossner is now 14 points behind Melchers in the World Cup standings, ensuring that the remaining three stops of the series will be nail biters. The seventh World Cup is in late August in France.
Dede Demet wins in Montreal

Her name was not often mentioned among the favorites, but American Dede Demet Barry (TalgoAmerica.com) was victorious in the Montreal stage of the World Cup. Australian Anna Millward (Saturn Timex) took second place and Geneviève Jeanson (CAN, RONA) came in third. The whole race was played in the12th and last lap of the 99.6 kilometer race.
It was a windy day, and the wind got stronger as the kilometres went by. It was a capricious and changing wind, so there were not many real attempts to break away from the pack - the wind played against that.
And so it unfolded as an elimination race, with riders progressively dropping behind. But it was not as tough as might have been expected; witness the winner's relatively slow time - 14 minutes slower than Jeanson's course record of last year. Candidates to victory in this climber's race - Luperini, Bessette, Arndt, Sunstedt, Jeanson - were saving their energy by staying in the first third of the peloton, but didn't want to fight the wind directly.
Team RONA took the race into their own hands - Amy Jarvis (CAN), Melissa Holt (NZ), and Manon Jutras (CAN) all took turns at the front. On the third lap, Jeanson scared her teammates when she stopped and asked for a new front wheel - hers had a broken spoke. Melissa Holt waited and brought her back to the main field at "time trial pace", Jeanson said after the race.
Manon Jutras then put a little sparkle in the race. Riding in her first major event since she broke her pelvis at Redlands in March, for almost eight laps she drove the pack and shielded her leader Jeanson.
At the beginning of the last lap, the front group was still quite large. More than 20 riders were there and even Petra Rossner, not on her kind of course, managed to stay with them.
Then, a few hundred meters after the penultimate climb of the Mount Royal, Demet and Millward accelerated; the rest of the field looked at each other. Demet and Millward worked well together, and in no time at all the pair had a one minute lead on the pack. "Like everyone else I let them go," said Jeanson after the race. "Physically I felt good, I had plenty of reserves, but with the wind, it was no use trying to come back, we hesitated for too long. I thought the race would be decided in the last climb, but Dede (Demet) and Anna (Millward) fooled us by breaking away early in the lap. They showed guts, they won, they deserve it."
Demet left Millward behind in the last climb. Jeanson accelerated 200 meters from the finish line, leaving behind her companions in misfortune.
