Flemish win for Aerts

Belgian Mario Aerts has become the first Flemish rider to win La Flèche Wallonne atop the Mur de Huy since the race finish was moved there in 1983. Aerts comes from Herenthals, the home town of another great Flemish champion Rik Van Looy. Today he showed that he had the strongest legs on the final 20% ramp in Huy, beating Venezuelan Basque Unai Etxebarria (Euskaltel) and Michele Bartoli (Fassa Bortolo) for Lotto's second consecutive win in this race.

Aerts, along with last year's winner Rik Verbrugghe and Serge Baguet were Lotto's main men for La Flèche. Baguet told Cyclingnews before the start that the course "suits me...I have to have a little bit of luck too." While Verbrugghe said that he was going "almost as well as last year" after finishing 16th in the Tour of the Basque Country.

At the end of a very aggressive and fast race, today's game of Lotto was won by Aerts, who made the decisive break with 8 kilometres to go. After Axel Merckx (Domo) initiated the break, Aerts joined him along with Venezuelan Unai Etxebarria (Euskaltel) and Portuguese José Azevedo (ONCE). 1999 winner Michele Bartoli (Fassa) then bridged across with Andrea Noè (Mapei), and that was the race.

"I was afraid of Bartoli and Noè, who weren't working in the break. Before the Mur Merckx and I did the most work," said Aerts, who should remember Verbrugghe towed three riders last year until the foot of the Mur de Huy, when he rode away from them.

Aerts did exactly that today, dropping his companions one by one to finish 3 seconds clear of Etxebarria and Bartoli. "I thought that Bartoli was the strongest but apparently not," he added.

27 year old Aerts has showed plenty of promise, but has had few top results so far in his career. Wins in the G.P. d'Isbergues (1996), Circuit Franco-Belge (1997) and the Giro della Provincia di Lucca (2001) have been backed by consistent high placings in other events, and he is ranked 46th on the UCI scale.

"It is really nice that I have finally won a big race. For Sunday (Liege-Bastogne-Liege) I am a lot calmer and that is a real advantage."

Another rider who broke new ground today was Venezuelan Unai Etxebarria, who became the first rider from that country to finish on the podium of a major classic. Etxebarria was born in Caracas, and has ridden for Euskaltel-Euskadi since 1996. His more fancied namesake David Etxebarria finished ninth today, and is certainly one of the favourites for Sunday's Liege-Bastogne-Liege.
