Up for the challenge: The Tom Danielson Giro diary 2006

With victory in the Tour de Georgia and a top 10 ride at the Vuelta a España, 2005 saw Tom Danielson come of age.

Now one of Discovery's leaders, the likable American climbing specialist will be looking to realise the full extent of his incredible stage race potential. But before he addresses a few personal goals, there's the not-so-minor matter of helping Paolo Savoldelli achieve his third victory at the Giro d'Italia in May. Follow his progress on Cyclingnews.

Stage 5 - Thursday, May 11: Piacenza - Cremona TTT, 38 km

Seven times the motivation

Today was the rest day. We travelled last night from Belgium to Italy and arrived at our hotels just before midnight. A long day for sure.

We slept in and had a late breakfast. Then it was off on the time trial bikes to get ready for the team time trial tomorrow. Kinda of a weird rest day so early in the race, but it was a good opportunity to get a good look at the TTT course.

The course is fast and quite un-technical. It will be hard to get big gaps tomorrow because of the flat and fast nature of the course. The team is very motivated and so am I, so we will absolutely go as fast as we can!

Back in Girona, my wife Kristin's friend Sarah Tescher just arrived and they have been exploring MTB trails together. Kristin is getting ready for her first international competition this weekend, the Madrid MTB World Cup. I am excited for her as I hear it is a great event.

Time to get ready for tomorrow. There will be a special guest in the car so we will all be '7 times' more motivated...

Ciao,
Tom
