Canberra Off Road Cyclists - 2002 Summer Series finale

Majura Pines, May 13, 2002

By Julia Graczyk
The final race of the 2002 summer series was held in glorious autumn conditions, sunny, warm and calm. Coinciding with Mother's day didn't seem to affect participation with close to 120 riders coming out to race. The course set was over 7km in length, but was fast and flowing, and required the rider to demonstrate skill in taking their momentum through some moderately technical sections interspersed throughout the course. to balance this, there was also a fair proportion of fire trail in the course, which allowed those riders with raw power and fitness to make up time on those more technically inclined.

In the Senior Men's race Dylan Cooper rode a consistent race to win, with a margin of almost three minutes over David Osmond, with Ben Geier a further two minutes back. The Senior Women's race saw a visitor to the club, Kristina Strode-Penny take first place with a convincing margin of almost four minutes over current Australian XTerra Champion Raeleigh Tennant, whose race was hampered by a crash out on the course.

The Veteran Men's race saw much closer racing, with Tim Minehan and Simon Tilley separated by only seconds, to take first and second place respectively. Tilley was the course setter for the race, and said that although the course suited him, he was unable to chase down Minehan on the final lap.

In the largest field of the day, with over 25 riders, the Sport B Men race was won by Matt ORourke with John Paul thirty seconds back in second place. Other category winners included Richard Davis in Masters Men, Joe Cram in Under 17 Men, and Melanie McConnell in Sport A Women.
