Big fields and perfect conditions at Mornington

Well today's race started with perfect conditions, with a temperature of 25 degrees, no wind and on a flat 8km circuit, 186 riders came down to Crib Point located on the Mornington Peninsula water front.

A Grade started hard with James Taylor (Car) taking three other riders broke away early in the 10 lap race. They manage to stay away for three laps, when the bunch brought them back in. Dean Johnstone (Car) was the next to make his break taking Lee Deluca (Nob) with him. With a little help from a car towing a boat they manage to stay away for two laps. With the field back together at the bell, Ray Turner thought it was his turn and manage to stay away for a comfortable win. Second place went to the strong ox Justin Davis (Car) (who wanted to enter C Grade), Arron Gullan (Bbn) and Heath Jackson took the final placing.

B Grade our largest grade had almost 60 riders, also doing 10 laps. The bunch pretty well stayed together with attacks going trough out the race. No-one was going to get away and stay away today. This made for a big bunch sprint for the line. Frank Chiprano (Car) found he was stronger than he thought coming in a full bike length in front of Grant Jamison, (Car) Chris Donlon (Stk) and Jamie Goodard (Bbn). Louisa Hamilton White (Car) was the first women finished, and was getting a lot of pats on the back for a great ride.

C Grade also had a large field with 50 riders competing. They were told before the race they were doing six laps, only to find Bobby (our chief commissar) thought eight laps will do. The whole grade seem content in staying together until the 5 lap saw Rob Davis (Car) Glauncarla Modulon (Stk), Russell Grass (Car) and Rene Heinrich (Nor) making a move. They manage to stay away until a lap to go. A bunch sprint for the flag saw Chris Lee (Stk) taking the honors from Modulon. Next came Murray Hyde (Stk) follow by Rob Davis. Kath Allen with all smiles was the first women across the line.

D Grade had riders of all ages, ranging from 11 years old to our young 60 years old riders. With 7 laps of the circuit the riders were dropping like flies. With only half the bunch left at the finish, the first place went to our own Perry Johnson (CHL), Kirsty Bartolin was the first women across the line came in second and young Alex Smyth and Sean burke making the final placings.

The Chelsea Club would like to thank every one that helped out on the day. We also like to congratulate all riders that competed and hope to see you next time.

Next race will be The Jack McGowan handicap on Saturday May 11 of May at Modella, hosted by the Carnegie Club.
