Iljo Keisse and Robert Bartko continue to lead the Gent Six Days, with a one lap advantage over three teams after as many days. Erik Zabel and Leif Lampater continue to hold second with 172 points, while Kenny De Ketele and Andreas Beikirch sit firmly in third place with 156 points to fourth placed Bruno Risi and Alexander Aeschbach's 118 points. The night concluded with a pair of Keirin races that hadn't featured on the race program during the first two evenings.

Belgian pair Stijn Steels and Tosh van der Sande increased their lead over the United States of America duo of Austin Carroll and East Guy in the UIV Talents Cup, the Under 23 version of the Gent Six Day. The Belgians are one lap ahead over the Americans, with Gert Jan Van Immerseel and Maarten Vlasselaer in third.

Steels said after the race that he thought they could hang on until Sunday. "It looks like the Americans weren't too good today and I think it will stay that way," he said.

United States of America coach Clay Worthington didn't quite see it the same way. "They just didn't have it tonight," he said. "You have those days once in a while and tonight was one of them."

But Worthington agreed that it has been a long trip for the Americans, who are racing in their fourth UIV Cup race for the month, and the schedule has left its marks. The pair is going back to the United States after the Belgian experience.

The third night started out with the points race, where De Ketele and Beikirch cleaned up. The duo finished second twice before overcoming Leon Van Bon and Pim Ligthart for a win. Despite violent efforts, no team was able to gain a lap during the race. Their win got De Ketele and Beikirch over the magic 100-point marker as well as the overall lead, thanks to receiving the bonus lap.

The team elimination came once again down to a battle of the Titans. Keisse/Bartko, Zabel/Lampater and De Ketele/Beikirch were the three teams left. Zabel and Lampater had driven a lot of the final laps from the front, but when Beikirch attacked Zabel was gapped and with a quarter lap to go he realised it was over and swung high.

The sprint between Beikirch and Keisse was a tactical affair, with lots of fakes to start the sprint. The two battled handle bar to handle bar until the line, with Keisse edging out his compatriot. Beikirch hit his handle bar in frustration, as he had come so close.

There was no surprise in the lap record. Once again, it was Keisse, perfectly launched by Bartko, who took the win. His 8.83 was a mere 14 hundredths of a second faster than Tim Mertens/Andreas Müller.

Risi/Aeschbach and Danny Stam/Peter Schep were the first to lap the field. Then Keisse/Bartko, Italians Angelo Ciccone/Fabio Masotti and De Ketele/Beikirch took off, putting Zabel/Lampater on the defensive. Luke Roberts/Marc Hester and Van Bon/Ligthart were the next to lap the field. When almost every team had caught up again Risi/Aeschbach hammered away. This set of the next round of attacks, with three quarters of the teams having caught up by the midway mark. The only ones left behind were the Danes Jens-Erik Madsen/Casper Jørgensen, Dimitri De Fauw/Steven De Neef and Nicky Cocquyt/Ingmar De Poortere.

Risi/Aeschbach continued their assault and gained another lap. That set off a royale chase by Zabel/Lampater and Keisse/Bartko. De Ketele/Beikirch joined in and the four strong teams were ahead of everyone else.

At a time when a couple of other teams caught up, it was Risi/Aeschbach and Keisse/Bartko who again took off, with Roberts/Hester in tow. That put Zabel/Lampater on the defensive again, but the Germans reacted swiftly. When the others had reached the tail end of the bunch, Zabel/Lampater were already half a lap up, with Stam/Schep helping in the effort.

After 33 minutes completed, it was Risi/Aeschbach and Keisse/Bartko again escaping from the front, just as the others had caught on. The noise level immediately went up again.

Risi/Aeschbach and Keisse/Bartko were one lap ahead, with the 40 minutes completed. Ten more laps remained before the winner was declared. Keisse made a strong attack with two laps to go and only Risi and Lampater could follow. Keisse got out of the saddle, but Risi came around in the final metres, while Lampater finished in third.

The first Derny race looked like Van Bon had it sealed when they headed to the final straight, but Mertens came around in the final stretch.

In the subsequent elimination race Bartko and Lampater said good-bye early. But De Ketele was still in the mix. When it was down to him, De Fauw and Hester, De Ketele took off early trying to surprise the others. But they clawed their way back, pushing De Ketele out of the competition and into third place. The sprint between Hester and De Fauw was a photo finish, with De Fauw taking the win.

The second Derny race was once again won by super-dernyman Joop Zijlaard, with Zabel on his wheel. Keisse had to settle for second this time.

The 500-metre time trial was most notable for the tactics employed by Stam/Schep. Teams have three laps to bring themselves up to speed before the flying start of the three-lap venture around the track. Because the launch man is on the front already for the speed-up laps, teams launch their final sprinter after one lap. Fresh legs will tackle the final two laps.

Stam and Schep did it differently, doing the hand-sling after one and a half lap. That left the duo with a 30.51 and easily in last place. The best time had been set by Roberts and Hester with a 28.47, but once again time trial specialists Keisse/Bartko came through, cheered on by frenetic student crowd. The Belgian-German combination clocked in at 27.87. That gave them a jump over the 200-point hurdle and another bonus lap.

Madison shakes overall

Van Bon/Ligthart were the first to lap the field, once again followed by Risi/Aeschbach. When Keisse/Bartko took off, Zabel/Lampater knew exactly what they had to do - stay on the fast-spinning wheels. Eventually everybody except Ciccone/Masotti and Depoortere/Cocquyt had caught up on laps.

It was Zabel/Lampater who took off and lapped the field next time around. They desperately needed it, already being two laps down in the overall. But 15 minutes into the race Keisse/Bartko struck back, voiding the effort by Zabel/Lampater.

A dangerous move formed with 15 minutes remaining when Zabel/Lampater and Stam/Schep went off the front and lapped the field. Keisse/Bartko tried several efforts to make up the loss, but Zabel/Lampater were attentive. In fact with five minutes to go Zabel/Lampater tried another attack, but that was also countered.

With literally only one minute remaining Keisse got out of the saddle, storming past a surprised Lampater. The latter was looking for help and actually received it, leaving the Keisse/Bartko move stranded. Roberts had also lapped the field, giving three teams a 166 metre advantage.

Lampater took out the sprint ahead of Stam/Schep and De Ketele/Beikirch. The latter were a lap down so finished in fourth, one place behind Roberts/Hester.

The super sprint was won by Van Bon/Ligthart, while Mertens/Müller took the scratch race win. Risi won the third Derny race and Cocquyt took the elimination race, giving a couple of students a special treat. They had two signs, so could hold up the one that said "Cocquyt is god" (the other one was "Danke Erik").

The final Derny went to De Fauw, leaving the track for a event that hadn't featured in the first couple of nights the Keirin. Van Bon took the first heat, while Cocquyt went early and held on to win the second race.

Steels and Van der Sande increase lead in the UIV Cup

The Belgian pair of Stijn Steels and Tosh van der Sande increased their lead over the US duo of Austin Carroll and East Guy in the UIV Talents Cup, the U23 version of the Gent Six Day. The Belgians are one lap ahead over the Americans, with Van Immerseel and Vlasselaer in third.

Steels said after the race that he thought they could hang on until Sunday. "It looks like the Americans weren't too good today and I think it will stay that way."

Gent students hot on college night

Both Steels and Van der Sande go to Gent university and had plenty of support from fellow students on college night. The UIV Cup kicked off with a one-lap time trial. Yesterday's winning duo Dostal/Bares set the first benchmark, with a 9.52. The German team of Schweizer/Riedle bested them by seven hundredths of second. The Belgian pair of Sprengers/Verhamme immediately set a new best time, with a 9.38.

Only two teams were left – the leading two. East and Carroll, clad in green today, were first to go, but couldn't quite get into a good rhythm. They scored a 9.61. Under the roar of the spectators Steels/Van der Sande scored a new best time, with a 9.23.

In the night's Madison, the pair of Corthesy/Keslin took off and ten laps before the first sprint the had lapped the field. But as soon as they reached the tail end they lost it again, and wound up fighting a quarter to a half lap behind for quite some time. Just before the first sprint, the favourites were all lurking at the front, with Fenn/Rowe taking the honours. Steels/Van der Sande finished in second, while Carroll/East had their handover just before the line, but they couldn't get past the others.

After struggling for some 30 laps, Corthésy/Kaeslin were finally back in the mix. Everything was back together, but with the second sprint approaching, drama took over. First, one rider from the Christian Kos / Jesper Asselman duo crashed. Then the van Immerseel / Maarten Vlasselaer team attacked, taking Dostal/Bares and Steels/Van der Sande with them. Carroll/East had a slight gap and crossed the sprint line in fourth, receiving one point.

The third sprint went to Steels/Van der Sande again and they kept going, quickly gaining ground. After ten laps they had gained about half a lap, chased by the bunch. Carroll/East took the front and furiously tried to get back, but the Belgians inched closer and closer to the bunch. After 17 laps they had caught up.

With ten to go the leading duo attacked again, but this time the Americans were right on their wheel. This set up a bunch sprint, in which neither of the favourites figured. The Belgians now lead by 19 points and one lap, putting the USA pair on the defensive when the racing resumes on Friday.
