Local favourite Iljo Keisse and German partner Robert Bartko continue to lead the Gent Six Day, after another successful night of racing. The pair has extended their lead over German duo Erik Zabel and Leif Lampater to 21 points, with Zabel and Lampater now on 115 points.

Both teams remain equal on laps, with Kenny de Ketele and Andreas Beikirch also holding on to remain equal on laps after night two. Bruno Risi and Alexander Aeschbach gained one lap in the day's final event, leaving them one lap behind in fourth place with 70 points.

The UIV Cup's overall standings were shaken up on night two, with Belgians Stijn Steels and Tosh Van der Sande taking over from the American duo of Guy East and Austin Carroll.

Rolling introduction

The points race got underway after the riders were introduced during a rolling introduction. Italian pair Angelo Ciccone and Fabio Masoti took the most points, winning sprints three and four before taking second in the final sprint. Zabel and Lampater claimed the final sprint, securing them two points for the overall. Keisse and Bartko also won one sprint, but it wasn't the final sprint, so they were placed behind Zabel and Lampater without any points.

Zabel and Lampater then made things worse for Keisse and Bartko by winning the team elimination. Bartko and Keisse were eliminated early and didn't get any points. The victory saw the Germans assume the overall lead with 89 points versus the 82 points of Keisse and Bartko.

But Bartko and Keisse struck back quickly and reclaimed their lead after the one-lap time trial. The enormous cheer of the spectators pushed Keisse to pedal 8.78 seconds over the 166 metres.

A 40-minute Madison race took place before the live music kicked off during the break. De Ketele and Beikirch took charge of the race, lapping the field with Swiss pairing Risi and Aeschbach. De Ketele and Beikirch also won the final sprint, showing everyone who was boss.

More noise

The noise from the music in the break had vanished, but the Derny race made sure it didn't get too quiet in Het Kuipke. Risi won this one, once again with big man Joop Zijlaard setting the pace.

The elimination race came down to an exciting sprint between Leon van Bon and Luke Roberts. Van Bon stormed away from Roberts with one lap to go, but Roberts clawed his way back into the race and tried to get past Van Bon in the final metres. Van Bon had other ideas, however, and wasn't going to let his hard work go unrewarded as he claimed an exciting win.

The top two teams passed the magic 100 points and received a bonus lap, leaving the Germans in front again, albeit with a slim two-point lead. De Ketele and Beikirch were on the same lap count, but with only 83 points.

Keisse then took out the Derny race in style by lapping the field. Unfortunately for Keisse lapping in the Derny doesn't count towards the overall, so Keisse and Bartko were still equal on laps with the other two pairs. Keisse's big effort didn't go without reward though, as the Belgian-German pair slipped back into the overall lead with a slim three point margin.

Keisse and Bartko's lead was boosted when they once again blasted fastest through the 500m time trial. They scratched the 28-second barrier to claim a convincing win over Roberts and Hester, who were more than half a second behind. The win gave Keisse and Bartko 20 points, while Zabel and Lampater added only four points to the tally. De Ketele and Beikirch were worse off and left empty handed.

Keisse and Bartko, still exhausted from their time trial effort, were the first to leave the teams elimination race. This left the door open for Zabel and Lampater to sneak back into the lead, but with eight teams remaining and the sprint coming up, their handover didn't work.

Zabel was going to launch Lampater for the dash to the line, but their hands only briefly met. Then they slipped away from each other, as did the opportunity to regain the lead. With Risi and Aeschbach out next, there were no favourites left, allowing Mertens and Müller to win ahead Roberts and Hester.

Risi could once again count on Joop Zijlaard as pacemaker in the Derny finale, but the others were invading the big man's turf. Keisse took out the win with Michel Vaarten, increasing their lead to 21 points over Zabel and Lampater. De Ketele and Beikirch had 91 points, still equal on laps, when they claimed third ahead of Risi and Aeschbach, who were two laps behind with just 50 points.

Nothing changed in the overall after the scratch race, won by De Fauw and De Neef.

Risi and Aeschbach took out the night's final event, a 30-minute + 10 lap Madison. The Swiss duo was one lap ahead with Stam/Schep and Roberts/Hester. Risi had the honour of sprinting for the line in the final event of the night.

Americans surrender lead

First up was a one-lap time trial for the UIV Cup, where Czech duo Jan Dostal/Jiri Bares claimed victory. Behind the winners the overall battle was heating up as Steels and Van de Sande took second ahead of former leaders Carroll and Guy. That cut the American's overall lead by two points, to seven.

Steels and Van de Sande then really cleaned up in the 200-lap Madison. The pair won three of the six sprints and finished second once putting them in control with 18 points. East and Carroll won one sprint and finished third and fourth in another, making their grand total eight points.

The fallout from the points race left the Belgians with a seven-point lead after night two. The two favourite pairs have distanced all the others by at least one lap. British pair Andrew Fenn/Luke Rowe are sixth, two laps behind and three points on their tally. The other Anglophones, Jackie Simes (USA) and Peter Williams (Great Britain) are in ninth, with one point and four laps down.
