Bicisport rider Patrick Naughton was the star of A grade at the weekly Randwick Botany Cycling Club circuit race at Heffron Park on Saturday 19 October 2002. The weather was fine and warm. Randwick Botany riders Clive Hammerson and Robert Cater broke away from the 10-rider A-Grade bunch by the second lap, but were reigned-in a few laps later. The bunch maintained an average speed of 40kph until the bell lap when the riders slowed to jockey for a good position for the final sprint. Naughton proved too strong, winning in a time of 54min 58sec after 36km of hard slog. Randwick Botany U17 rider Chris Jenkins was second followed by David Watkinson (Manly Warringah) and Randwick Botany’s Matthew Lucas.

Randwick Botany’s Mark Robertson did much of the work at the front of the 11-rider 32km B-Grade bunch. "It was a bit of a training ride for me today," said Mark after the race. Ian Potts from the CATS Club on the Gold Coast competed in B grade and finished with the bunch. Randwick Botany’s Sean Bloch rode a tactical race, staying mid-field and sizing up the opposition. In a well-judged sprint, Bloch powered home to win in a time of 52min 10sec and an average speed of 37.2kph. David Jackson was second with Craig Dempsey (Eastern Suburbs) third. Chris White and Alex Simmons finished just out of the placings.

Mark Taylor won the 13-rider D grade 20km event in a time of 34min 13sec and an average speed of 35.4kph. Second was Stuart Lane and third Guy Bicknell.

Fifteen junior riders competed in four events. U17 Robert Cater recorded a blistering time of 2min 53sec in the 1-lap 2km Time Trail. Other junior results can be found at the end of this report.

Coverage of local cycling results can be heard on Sydney’s Eastside Radio 89.7FM 'Game On' program, hosted by Brad Cooke, each Saturday morning from 10am to 11am.
