ACADEMY ONE, TWO, THREE

Illawarra Cycle Club, West Dapto, June 15, 2002

Thirty-six riders in three grades took advantage of balmy weather to participate in Saturday's Caesar's Illawarra Cycle Club 41 kilometer scratch race on the West Dapto course. With the bunches climbing the steep side of Marshall Mount on the first lap, the scene was set for some attacks, as was the case with all three grades chasing escapees.

The A-grade event got away quickly with Adam Rourke attacking from the start however he was quickly hauled back to the bunch. At the end of the first lap several riders were starting to apply the pressure after the impact of once up the steep side. With the wind beginning to gust Josh Wall and Luke Dale worked together to get away. With the rest of the bunch stretching out Guy Matthiske, Chris Brown and Graham Rutter worked hard to bring them back. The two young academy riders, Wall and Dale stayed away from the bunch with academy graduate Peter Jones taking out the bunch sprint from Matthiske and Forbes.

The pace of the B-grade race was also fast with Tony Pulo and Peter Evans breaking away on the steep side on the first lap. Many riders shared duties at the front of the chase but were not able to haul them back. Pulo and Evans stayed away until the finish although the bunch, led across the line by the fast finishing Adam Hotchkiss, was able to close the gap in the last few kilometers.

C-grade pace was a little more steady with only six riders. Promising new rider Stuart Binns and Bobby Krstevski made their presence known throughout the race by setting the pace. Binns eventually took the finish with a generous lead over Krstevski from O'Dwyer.

Next week's Club Time Trial Championship over 27 kilometers must have enough marshals to run the event. Volunteers are asked to help out.
