Rain gods on side

The threat of rain loomed as riders negotiated the Boonooroo Road course on Saturday but held off until the finish, then the heavens opened. Most riders enjoyed the flat roads after a few weeks riding in the hills on Gayndah Road. All events were graded scratch races.

A and B grades combined for their 60km race and set a modest pace at the start. Bruce Phersson, Greg Lawler, Steve Creed-Jacobs and Garry McLeish tried for an early break but the bunch would not let them go and soon reeled them in. After the turn the pace picked up and riders were reportedly travelling at up to 52km/h, but those on the back could not be shaken off. A touch of wheels at the 45km mark saw two riders bite the bitumen but they were not seriously hurt and were more concerned about the condition of their bikes. This spread the field out as some riders stopped to offer assistance.

Peter Ransome has cemented his place as a B grade rider after only one season on the track. As he is a junior, riding a limited gearing, it must be said that his performance was fantastic to keep up with the open riders pushing huge gears. He was eventually rewarded with first place B grade. Mark Fielding and Chris Ihle filled the other B grade places. Greg Lawler outsprinted Marty Lahey to take the money in A grade while Michael Blacklock picked up third. Winning time for A and B grades was 1.30mins.

The C grade event, contested over 40km, produced exciting racing. On the line seasoned veterans Doug Geddes and Trevor Geysing were separated by 'young gun' Trent Pitt. Winning time was 1.14.28.

Vets/Women's 40km event also saw some keen racing. A super-fit Jenny Strack tried on a number of occasions to start a break but the others would not let the break go. The race ended with a sprint finish and toiler Ron McKay was rewarded for his hard work in the bunch with first place. Jim Ewart and Jenny Strack filled the places. Linda Jeremy rode a good race to come in fourth place. The winning time was 1hr 20mins 49secs.

Junior riders Nathan Dixon and Michaela Davies contested a distance of 18 km. They both rode well to complete the distance in 39mins and 40mins 40secs respectively.

While most riders have contested local events, one promising young Maryborough Cycle Club member has been producing some great performances in the metropolitan events. On the 18 May fourteen year-old David Keevers contested the Avanti Classic in Lowood near Brisbane. He rode in the combined under 15/17 road race over a distance of 25km. David produced a strong sprint finish to place second behind one of under 17 riders. Last Sunday David rode the Metropolitan Championship, a 28km road race at Balmoral and picked up a silver medal there. He no doubt will be brimming with confidence when he lines up for local racing next week. Well done David.

Racing next week is on the Gayndah Road course. Nominations 1.30pm racing starts 2pm. Further information phone 41281227.
