Large field at Smith's Crossing

The Bundaberg cycle club held its club races at Smith's crossing on Saturday last , and despite the absence of the seven A grade riders and youngsters Danny and Ashley Vagg, who were racing in an open race at Rockhampton, officials were pleased with large field that took part in the combined 22km handicap.

Friday Night Winter Track Racing

Dunc Gray Velodrome, July 12, 2002

Record Fields For FNWTR at Dunc Gray Olympic Velodrome

85 riders across 6 divisions fronted the starter at Friday Nights Winter Track Racing at the Dunc Gray Olympic Velodrome in Sydney. The two feature events being the Women's inaugural "Handle Bar Tavern Wheel Race" and the 100 Lap Madison race. Riders from as far as Goulburn, Central Coast, Newcastle, Illawarra and Gunnedah made the trek to Sydney to compete in this week's event.

The Women's Wheelrace saw 16 of NSW's top women track riders coming together to contest this inaugural event. Rebecca Borgo and Leonie Aisbett rode from the scratch mark giving away 110 meters over the 5-lap 1.25km distance. As the gun sounded, Sophie Cape (St George) was quickest away making contact with Elizabeth Georgouras (Bicisport). The scratch markers had caught Tanya Newton (Bicisport) but were not making progress on Cape and Georgouras as they continued to make inroads into the front markers. Up front Catriona Owens (Bicisport), Sandra Beaumount (Southern Highlands) and Amanda Whiteman (Bicisport) were setting the pace.

At 325 meters to go Karen Dutton (Sutherland Shire) went high to gain the run off the bank, Cape hesitated and went for the bottom only to get caught behind Whiteman and Beaumont. On the last turn Cape saw an opening and quickly move out in pursuit of Karen Dutton but it was all to no avail, failing to catch Dutton by the narrowest of margins. Amanda Whiteman rode very strongly to take 3rd over Sandra Beaumont and the fast finishing Angela Keys from Lidcombe taking 5th spot.

The 100 Lap Madison, the second of our winter series showed all the hallmarks of being a cracker of a race. With riders selecting their own teams for this event, we saw the Fitzpatrick Bros team up as with Jono Davis (St George) and Campbell Kerr (Southerland Shire) -favourites on paper and Hopkins/Browne winners of round 1, Robert Upton and Brian Appleyard, Bicisport's Miller & McNaughton, Mickael Stokes and Michael Lewis and Paul Bayley/Phil Dixon combination.

8 teams faced the starters gun and right from the outset the pace was on with the endurance riders doing their best to unsettle the more fancied sprint team combinations. The Fitzpatrick Brothers showed they were a formidable team accumulating some good early points, But by the half way mark Davis & Kerr had pegged them back to be level pegging on 27 points with the two young guns of Phillip Stokes and Chris Young (16year olds) only 3 points adrift. Davis and Kerr lifted the tempo with around 20 laps to go taking with them the Fitzpatrick Brothers.

A sensational turn of speed saw the young guns of Young and Stokes pull the more fancied pairings back setting the scene for a close and exciting dual over the closing two sprints. The Fitzpatrick Bros were victorious on the night but it was the sensational riding of Phillip Stokes and Chris Young who won the hearts of the Spectators as they took a well deserved 2nd placing just edging out the more fancied team of Jono Davis/Campbell Kerr.

There were a number of notable performances on the night in the supporting events. Ben Smith, Goulburn - Men's Division 1, Mitchell Leigh and Michael Mellish Central Coast in Division 2, Brian Radcliffe & Bill Cox, Hunter Districts in Division 2A, the ever consistent Mick Kejda in Division 3 and Amanda Whiteman in the Women's Division.

Next Friday night (19th July 2002) sees the staging of the Men's Division 2 inaugural 5 lap Wheel Race.

Gates open at 5.30pm with racing commencing at 7.00pm. Spectators - gold coin donation and gain access to the infield arena to watch all races.
