Bissell bags another win

A quiet stage on the penultimate day of the Tour of Southland has left tour leader Hayden Roulston (Trek Zookeepers Cafe) in an ideal position to defend the title he won for the first time last year. The Trek Zookeepers rider extended his lead slightly over Colour Plus' Marc Ryan to 1.31 minutes with only two stages left tomorrow.
Ryan's team-mate Logan Hutchings is third, just over three minutes down on the leader, while previous leader Reon Park, also from Colour Plus, is now four minutes down on Roulston.
How it unfolded
The 163 kilometre stage from Winton to Te Anau has been the scene of some dramatic events in recent years, from riders suffering from hypothermia to senior members of the peloton staging a go slow as a protest against race officials. The stage is also well known for punishing cross winds and the tortuous climb over the Blackmount Hill. There was little of that today as the peloton enjoyed the sun on its collective back and a tail wind for much of the stage.
An early break 14 km into the stage developed into a split with three riders - Scott Zwizanski (Bissell Pro Cycling), Michael Grabinger (Hilo Decorating) and Jonathan Atkinson (Riverside Rentals) - being allowed to ride away untroubled. The trio remained unchallenged until the Blackmount climb with 50 km to go when Atkinson was dropped.
A chasing duo of Mike Northey (The Southland Times) and Joseph Cooper (Subway) caught the front two riders with about 20 km to go. From there United States rider Zwizanski, 30, decided to leap away rather than test his sprinting skills.
He took the stage comfortably to give Bissell Pro Cycling its third consecutive stage win on this PowerNet-sponsored tour, while Mike Northey outsprinted Cooper for the other podium places.
The stage was dedicated to young Victorian rider Scott Peoples who was killed during a training ride in Australia a month after last year's tour. Peoples won two stages on last year's Southland tour, including the one from Winton to Te Anau, and was a team-mate of Northey's. A minute's silence was held before the start of the stage, while the Southland Times team rode with black armbands on.
Meanwhile, only two short stages now stand between Roulston and the title. The first is a 79 km stage from Te Anau to Lumsden, with the final 64 km stage from Winton to Invercargill.
With only one significant hill climb on the final day, during the morning stage at the Gorge Hill, the peloton will have few opportunities to attack the tour leader. He has a confident and strong team around him, is in good form himself and there seems to be a lack of will in the peloton to even mount a major challenge against the big South Cantabrian.
No rider has won the race in consecutive years since Brian Fowler took out the sixth of his record eight titles in 1990.
