Vennell takes another victory

Jeremy Vennell (Bissell Pro Cycling) won his second consecutive Tour of Southland stage this afternoon, but tour leader Hayden Roulston (Trek Zookeepers Café) has strengthened his hold on the yellow jersey. Vennell won the hill climb finish to the Crown Range lookout, with Trek Zookeepers' Roulston second and Southland Times rider Aaron Strong third.
The 133 kilometre stage began in sunny conditions in Lumsden and the day only improved as the PowerNet-sponsored tour moved away from the coast for the first time this week. Only 96 riders started the stage from the 125-strong field who started the race on Monday after three days of hard riding and sometimes horrendous weather conditions.
Logan Hutchings (Colour Plus) and Justin Kerr (Raboplus) made the early running before they were joined by Scott Wood (Benchmark Homes). By the time they reached the Devil's Staircase midway around Lake Wakatipu, the trio held a lead of nearly 90 seconds over the peloton.
At Frankton, Wilder got dropped from the breakaway but it wasn't long before the remaining two were caught by the peloton. Roulston attacked along with previous tour leader Reon Park (Colour Plus) and Adam Semple (Calder Stewart) from Australia.
When that break was shut down, Roulston attacked again, this time with Vennell and Colour Plus' Marc Ryan, the second placed rider in the tour. Ryan was dropped early in the climb up the Crown Range and with that threat safely nullified, Roulston was content to let Vennell ride away for his second stage win after he took out yesterday's afternoon stage from Tuatapere to Winton.
Roulston has increased his lead over Ryan to 1.28 minutes, with Logan Hutchings (Colour Plus) moving up to third place ahead of Gordon McCauley. Miles Watson (Share the Road) holds a big lead in the sprint standings from last year's green jersey winner Karl Murray (Raboplus), while Jeremy Yates (Subway) is the race's leading climber. Sixth placed Clinton Avery (Ascot Park Hotel) is the tour's leading under 23 rider.
Tomorrow's stage is considered the hardest on the tour. It covers 163 kilometres from Winton through to Te Anau and is often beset by strong cross winds. Two years ago it featured a "go slow" from much of the peloton after race officials decided to suspend part of the stage due to wind, but refused to adjust any times. The seventh stage also includes a protracted climb over the Blackmount hill which is the penultimate meaningful climb of the race.
Tomorrow's stage is being dedicated young Australian rider Scott Peoples who was killed while out training near the Victorian town of Merton just a month after winning two stages, including the Winton to Te Anau stage, on last year's tour.
The race, which now includes only 96 of the original 125 starters, will observe a minute's silence before the race in memory of Peoples, with a presentation to follow at the stage finish in Te Anau. The Southland Times team will also wear black armbands during the stage.
