Criteriums close AYOF

Competitors in the cycling at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival headed outdoors today to race for the final medals on offer in the men's and women's criteriums on the Dunc Gray circuit at Bass Hill.

Sydney's Warren Scott, 17, who on Friday claimed gold on the track in the scratch race claimed gold with a last gasp sprint to overtake New Zealand's Adam Coker on the line. Victorian Simon Clarke, 16, came through for third.

The men's race was a hard fought battle with an early break away group keeping the pace high. Queenslander Miles Olman, 16, missed the break but put in a superhuman effort, spending seven laps on the front of the chasers and eventually reeling in the leaders with 12 laps remaining. Olman, from Rockhampton, immediately launched his own counter attack but was unable to establish a decisive break.

As the field swept into the final 100 metres Coker surged off the front and looked set to claim New Zealand's first gold medal of the cycling competition. But Scott timed his run to perfection and overhauled Coker in the final metre to claim victory.

"I had a really big day of racing yesterday with team sprint, keirin, points race and last nights NSW Carnival events," said Scott. "So I knew today my best bet would be to ‘sit and sprint'."

"I was pretty tired but at not stage did I feel that I was going to be dropped," said Scott who sat in the main field and waited for the right time to join the fray. "But it was hard out there though."

Scott did put on a burst when Olman attacked but did just enough to make sure his Queensland rival didn't get too far ahead and then returned to the safety of the main bunch until the final sprint.

"I had Coker in my sights in the final 100 metres," said Scott. "I went a up a few gears to get going, down a few gears to get past him and then ‘Whooshka!', I had him."

In the women's event Bathurst cyclist Meg Windsor, 17, broke away from the field half way through the race and rode strong tempo to maintain her lead until the end. Canberra's Jessie MacLean, 17, led home the bunch sprint for the silver medal with Skye-Lee Armstrong, 16, third.

"I usually go in with a plan but for this race I was pretty tired and I knew the rest of the girls were too after this week's hard racing," Windsor said. "But I was feeling pretty good during the race so I decided to attack and see if I could hold out."

Windsor, who claimed a silver medal in the 2001 AYOF, was the bronze medallist in yesterday's points race.

"I've got the complete set now," she said after receiving her gold medal. "I didn't really train specifically for any one of this week's races but I managed to finish top eight in everything and I'm really excited about my results."

The top performer at the cycling this week was Japanese sprint sensation Tsubasu Kitatsura who won four out of four events he contested as a member of the small but effective Japanese team which dominated the sprinting event. Kitatsura won gold medals in the sprint, keirin, kilometre time trial and team sprint and was also one of the most popular riders trackside displaying a great sense of fun and today was one of the loudest supporters cheering on all the competitors who lined up in the road event.
