The Master Museeuw: This one goes to eleven...

World Cup racing resumed in earnest today with the HEW Cyclassics race in Hamburg, Germany. After a break during the major stage races of late spring and summer, it was time for the one day specialists to return to the fore as the second half of ten event World Cup got underway. Despite a course which appears to favour the sprinters, it was the eternal strongman and current World Cup leader Johan Museeuw (Domo-Farm Frites) who again stamped his authority on the single day classics. "This is very important," said a delighted Museeuw after the race. "It's my 11th World Cup win. In the first part of the season I was strongest in Paris-Roubaix. Then I was the strongest here in Germany."
Starting in cool, rainy conditions, the HEW Cyclassics was destined to boil down to an endless series of short-lived breaks, a true test for the tenacious. With the course's only notable difficulties being the three climbs of the Waseberg, a short sharp 16% power climb, the sprinters were expected to shine. But just as the fast men of the peloton had been foiled in previous editions of this race, there were many riders who had no intention of resigning themselves to a bunch sprint this year.
The day's requisite early solo break from Team Cologne's Jörg Strauss, who stayed out front for an hour and a half and built a maximum lead of over four minutes. That's as far as things got for Strauss, who was eventually reeled in by the peloton, where numerous riders sat poised to counter attack and keep the sprinters' teams on their toes.
Among them was a group of four riders, including Martin Elmiger (Phonak), Mauro Radaelli (Tacconi Sport), Andrea Ferrigato (Alessio), and Saeco's Igor Astarloa, who created a gap of 35 to 40 seconds after several short-lived groups tried their luck off the front. The flat and typically wide roads of the HEW Cyclassics course provide little opportunity for a serious break to form, and the foursome's advantage would prove to be as significant as any, prior to the eventual winning move.

While the speed remained high in the peloton, the race was not controlled by the strong Lotto and Telekom teams. Robbie McEwen was already out of the race, having abandoned after a crash which also claimed Nico Mattan, Wilfried Cretskens, and McEwen's teammate Glenn d'Hollander. Also involved in the crash were Ludo Dierckxsens, Jens Voigt, and Nicolas Jalabert, each of whom remounted and rejoined the race.
As the race approached the final climb of the Waseberg, Phonak led the peloton, as Museeuw, Freire, Bettini, and other favourites looked comfortable and attentive. Despite his obviously good form following the Tour de France, Erik Zabel appeared often out of place and poorly positioned. Already a victim of one puncture and the ensuing chase, Zabel found himself spending a considerable amount of time rejoining the front of the group. But positioning at the head of the race would prove crucial, as defending champion Zabel soon found out, after being caught behind a crash near the rear of the peloton.
Zabel wasn't hurt in the crash, but his delay couldn't have come at a worse time. As the flurry of attacks began on the Waseberg, Zabel was far behind the front group, with remarkably little assistance from his Telekom team. Despite the best efforts of Jan Schaffrath to pace him back to the leading group, Zabel would never again see the front end of the race. To his credit he persevered, and again showed his strength by towing the group of chasers himself, or simply riding the others off his wheel. But in the end it would not be the flying German delighting the crowd with a win on home soil.

With pre-race favourites Robbie McEwen (Lotto-Adecco) and Erik Zabel (Telekom) both knocked out of contention by crashes, the dynamic of the race changed suddenly in favour of a strong breakaway on this final ascent of the Waseberg. Over the top, a trio including Gerolsteiner's Davide Rebellin and Saeco teammates Danilo Di Luca and Igor Astarloa moved clear of the bunch, and within moments they were joined by a formidable group of six, notably containing Domo's Museeuw and Vainsteins, and US Postal's George Hincapie.
Without the vice grip of the sprinters' teams to control the race, this was winning move, even if the leaders' cooperation appeared in question for several kilometres. Pre-race über-favourites McEwen and Zabel may have been removed from contention, but the final escape contained an interesting mix of fast finishers, with Italians Fabio Baldato, Cristian Moreni, and Paolo Bettini adding muscle to the group. Besides the obvious glory of a World Cup victory at stake, Museeuw was looking to conserve his leader's jersey, and therefore marking Bettini, who himself was in position to take the lead in the World Cup competition with a victory in Hamburg.
After pushing the pace in the lead group, Cristian Moreni took the first clear shot at victory and attacked alone with 6km to go. Bettini countered, and the two briefly held their lead ahead of the chasers, but veterans Museeuw and Rebellin had no intention of letting the duo steal the victory. Museeuw profited enormously from the efforts of an in-form teammate Romans Vainsteins, who worked tirelessly to chase down Bettini, as well as Di Luca, who was the next to counter with 1.5 km to go.

In the closing meters, Museeuw sat in second position behind Ferrigato, with several sprinters eagerly waiting their chance to pounce from behind. When the Lion of Flanders was the first to jump, his opponents must have expected the move as one from a man whose fastest sprints were years behind him. But Museeuw continues to amaze, and with a face of pain and determination he not only jumped first, he jumped best, and nobody could match his charge to the line. He explained his sprinting success in typical Museeuw fashion. "I'm fast, but not so fast as Zabel. When it's a group of 80 or 100 I'm always afraid. With nine or ten I'm also strong."
Victory yet again in a World Cup event, the eleventh of his storied career, Museeuw was immediately congratulated by former Mapei teammate Bettini and Alessio's Moreni. Having used all ten fingers for his symbolic victory salute in Roubaix - signifying his then tenth World Cup win - he needed only give a traditional two-armed salute for his win in Hamburg. Another magnificent win from the master Museeuw.
