Bertogliati Maintains Maillot Jaune

For the last 130 years, the Saarland has been a key region between France and Germany, rich in mineral resources and of strategic importance. Today's Tour De France stage roughly follows the line of the Maginot Line, where France hoped to stave off the assault of the German forces in between 1929 and 1940. Today the Germans lost the battle for Saarbrucken and the Maillot Jaune, as World Champion Oscar Freire (Mapei-Quick Step) made the same inside move to win today as he used in last year's World's in Lisbon.
Freire is a true phenomenon; the 26 year old from Torrelavega, riding his first Tour De France, only resumed racing this season a little over a month ago in the Tour of Germany. When we spoke to him Monday morning in Luxembourg, Freire told Cyclingnews that "I'm really not sure how I'll do today - I'm still riding into form."
World Champion Freire today demonstrated why he may be the most dangerous sprinter in the business over the last 50 meters. Oscar came off Robbie McEwen's wheel with 75m to go, avoided a quick right elbow from the Brisbane rider and streaking across the finish line a bike ahead of the Lotto rider. "I wasn't hoping for this win today," said the delighted Freire, "but at the end I had some hope to win since I had good legs."

Wonder Boy Bertogliati maintained his Maillot Jaune for another day, following diesse Pietro Algeri's plan to the letter. "There were two possibilities today", said Algeri. "One was to let a break go and take the time bonuses, and the other was to get Svorada into the sprint to take a time bonus and stop Zabel. In the end, both worked out since Bertogliati led out the sprint for Svorada and finished 19th on the stage. Since the Ticinese had 10" on Zabel at the start of Stage 1 and the German only had an 8" time bonus for 3rd, the 23 year old Lampre rider has another dream day in the Maillot Jaune tomorrow.

Today was a gorgeous, warm summer day, the first of this year's Tour De France, the French teams again tried to stave off the expected assault of Erik Zabel and Team Deutsche Telekom. The fuchsia and black squad had missed a stage win and the Maillot Jaune by a whisker in Luxembourg, as Swiss rider Rubens Bertogliati grabbed the stage and the Tour lead from Lance Armstrong.
After 11 km, on a small climb just outside of Pontpierre Luxembourg, Sylvain Chavanel (BJR) made Monday's first good move and when Stéphane Berges (AG2R) and Thor Hushovd (CA) came across, the escape was in business. The pace was tremendous; the first hour was covered in more than 46 km/h, and the trio continued to build their lead as the course passed out of Luxembourg and into Germany at Schengen after 53 km.
After being in the first move yesterday and collecting 16 KOM points towards the Maillot Pois, long breakaway specialist Berges was looking to take the climber's tunic from Christophe Mengin and on the first KOM of the stage, the Cat. 4 Cote de Perl (4.8 km/4.8%) Berges won the sprint and came within one point of the Precious Pois lead. The three rider break continued to pound away, gaining a maximum lead of 5'05" after the feed zone in Merzig at the 91 km mark, where Chavanel became virtual Maillot Jaune.

After their lousy day yesterday, Credit Agricole was glad to have big Norwegian Thor Hushovd in the break. The powerful blond from Arendal was doing a lot of work in the break, but suddenly, after 113 km in Lockweiler, terrible, intense cramps seized the Norwegian's legs. As Berges and Chavanel hammered away, so began Hushovd's nightmare. Perhaps unused to the sudden summer heat, beset by severe leg cramps, the big Norwegian went backwards, straight through the peloton and out the back, where eventually he had to stop with 31 km to go and have his director sportif Roger Legeay massage his pain racked legs before continuing.
Up front, Berges took the 2nd KOM on the Cote d'Alsweiler-Heid with 48 km to go and took over the Maillot Pois lead, with the Lampre-led peloton now 2'30" behind. Telekom still wasn't participating in the chase so the gap fell slowly but both French riders realized the ultimate futility of their break and slowed the tempo. As the afternoon temperatures hit the mid 80's, the peloton had closed to 25" after 148 km. Hushovd's German team-mate Jens Voigt, one of the most fearless attackers in the peloton made a determined solo move as Hushovd got help and jumped up to, and then away from Berges and Chavanel.
The German assault on Saarbrucken had begun and it was bosch versus bosch, as Telekom now decided to ride hard behind Voigt.
Voigt gave it his all as usual, but the fuchsia and black train wasn't letting him go and the group was all together with 11 km to go. Telekom pounded hard through Saarbrucken and Zabel was primed for the win, coming off team-mate Fagnini's wheel with a powerful surge at 250 meters to go, but first McEwen and then Freire came around him.

Zabel was somewhat disappointed to not win the stage or take the Maillot Jaune, declaring "Both Freire and McEwen were faster than me today and that happens; as for the Maillot Jaune, perhaps it's better to stay where I am for now. It was really good to ride in Germany in the Maillot Vert. So we'll see tomorrow."
After perhaps the worst day of his career, Thor Hushovd managed to finish the stage despite his terrible cramps inside the time limit today. The tall Norwegian finished last, 19'22" behind Freire.
With a cold front and thunderstorms forecast for tomorrow on the 174.5 km Stage 3 from Metz to Reims, the windy, unpredictable weather could cause chaos on the Tour De France's return home for the first stage run entirely in the Hexagon.
