Second times the charm for unknown Bertogliati
Un-Geburtstag-Party for Zabel

Today was a classic Tour classic on Stage One of the 2002 Tour de France, since the hilly roads around Luxembourg are not far from the Ardennes climbs where spring classics like Liege-Bastogne-Liege and Fleche Wallone are contested. It was Erik Zabel's 32nd birthday and the monster man from Unna was looking for a special present in his 12th TdF stage win and possibly a Maillot Jaune.
But as the old saying goes, he who hesitates is lost and when an attack by an unknown young Swiss-Italian rider caught the sprinters by surprise, Zabel's Telekom team hesitated to close the gap and instead of podium champagne and tasty cake, Zabel came 2nd and had to satisfy himself with taking over his usual Green Points Jersey.
As for the young Swiss-Italian rider, who not only won the stage with a brilliantly timed move, he was a 23 year unknown named Rubens Bertogliati, a Lugano native riding his second Tour de France. Bertogliati had only won one pro race to date in his pro career, the GP Chiasso in March so his win in Stage One was surely his biggest career win ever. "It's incredible, it's great to win the stage and also the Yellow Jersey. I never even thought of (winning) it," said Bertogliati.
How it unfolded

After a calm first hour or so on Stage 1, Brad McGee (FDJ) tried to solo away before the first sprint in Heiderscheid after 50km, but Telekom chased the Sydneysider down and Erik Zabel (TEL) took the 6" time bonus sprint in front of Stuey O'Grady (CA) and Laurent Jalabert (CST). With his 2" bonus, Jaja became virtual Maillot Jaune, but his bonheur didn't last long as Stéphane Berges (AGR), Christophe Mengin (FDJ) and Ludo Dierckxsens (LAM) attacked just after the sprint, creating a small gap.
As is often the case in the first stages of the Tour de France, crashes occur in the nervous peloton and as this trio attacked, the first big chute happened, when 10 riders including Eric Dekker and Marc Wauters (Rab) and Enrico Cassani (DFF) went down. That caused a let up in the tempo in the peloton, and the Berges and co. were away.
All three riders are solid, punchy classics-type riders and on the cool, overcast day, aided by the push of southern breezes, the trio pushed north and quickly gained time on the peloton. Mengin took the points at first KOM on the Cote du Hoscheid at 69.5km, as the former TdF stage winner made clear his mission was to go for the Maillot Pois.
Up front, racing across the rolling, wooded countryside of verdant central Luxembourg, the gap continued to grow between the break and the peloton. After the feed zone in Bettendorf, with 108km raced, the break gained their maximum lead of 4'10". Once the peloton had consumed lunch, CSC-Tiscali decided that they wanted to have the break for dessert, so the red and white jerseys hit the front. With strong tempo men like Jacob Piil, Michael Sandstød and Andrea Peron working hard, the lead trio's advantage began to drop fast.

As the sun broke through the clouds, the peloton picked up the pace along the vineyard-lined hills along the Moselle River. With the key climb up the steep the Wall of Wormeldange looming with 44km to go, this spelled curtains for the three man break. With 50km to go, the CSC-Tiscali led peloton had the break in sight. As the trio hit the base of the 800m. wall, lined with thousands of celebrating Wormeldangers, Dierckxsens attacked hard on the climb that more resembled a muur in the Tour Of Flanders than a typical Tour de France climb and dumped Berges, while it was mission accomplished for Mengin, as the FDJ.com veteran grabbed the sprint at the summit of Wormeldange, ensuring that he would wear the ‘02 Tours first Maillot Pois as best climber.
Despite a comical motorcycle traffic jam that slowed the chasing peloton momentarily on the Wall, Rik Verbrugghe (LOT) attacked and quickly reeled in Dierckxsens. 9 important riders had gotten away on the climb, including Maillot Jaune Armstrong (USPS), Ivanov (FAS) Boogerd (RAB), Millar and Kivilev (COF), Botero (KEL),Halgand (DEL), Verbrugghe and Dierckxsens. The break had a 20" gap and all hell broke loose behind, with Bonjour, Credit Agricole and ONCE all leading the chase, while Christophe Moreau was dropped. The rangy Belfort rider had hit the deck hard and was clearly shaken up, but after a frantic 5km chase, the Armstrong group was caught and as the pace slackened, Moreau got back on.
La bagarre was in full swing, with attack after attack by classics riders like Bortolami (TAC) and Wadecki (DFF), who were away for the sprint at Remich with just over 30km to go. CSC-Tiscali rode the hard tempo again for Jaja, but as soon as this duo was brought back, Lampre-Daikin rider Serpellini went on the attack. With Lampre owner Emmanuele Galbusera in the team car today, the pink and blue Italian boys, ably directed by Pietro Algeri, wanted to make their mark today in Le Tour. Serpellini was joined by Moreni (ALS), Lefevre (DEL) and Casar (FDJ) and this quartet got 45" at one point, but with the fuchsia and black Telekom team on the front riding for Zabel, they were doomed.
On the final KOM of the day up Hostert with 10km to race, the peloton had closed down on the break, so the opportunistic Lefevre attacked to take the KOM points, as another break was quickly coming up behind. Basso (FAS), Bruylandts (DFF), Brochard (DEL) were joined by Merckx (DFF), Robin (FDJ) and Landis (USPS) and the sextet has a narrow gap on the long descent through the woods down to the foot of the final climb back up to Luxembourg city. But Telekom wasn't going to let anyone spoil Mr.Z's birthday party and as the final 2km ascent began up to the finish line, the fuchsia & black train was headed straight for the podium.

Suddenly, as the lined-out peloton hit the 1 km to go kite, a lone rider attacked on the right side of the road in what looked like a suicide move. Pumping away like a man possessed, it was another attack by a Lampre rider, this time Bertogliati. Known as an especially powerful rider, the 3rd year pro from Lugano pounded to a 5" gap with 500 meters to go, while the sprinters all looked at each other to see who would go after Bertogliati. As it turned out, it didn't matter, as the compact Lampre man not only won the stage in front of fast closing birthday boy Zabel, his 19th place in yesterday's prologue and the 20" time bonus landed him the Maillot Jaune!
How long can Bertogliati last in the Maillot Jaune? At least one day, as he'll start Monday's Stage Two from Luxembourg to Saarbrucken, Germany wearing the golden tunic, but with the now year older and hopefully wiser Zabel gunning for glory, and only 10" out of the Maillot Jaune in 10th on GC, look for the now green clad Telekom man to take over the TdF race lead at the stage finish in his homeland.
Bad day at the office for Moreau, who fell several times and had a mechanical, eventually finishing 3'20 down. Also Belgian Champion Tom Steels (Mapei-Quick Step) and American Jonathan Vaughters (Credit Agricole), who along with Erik Dekker (RAB) finished in the laughing group today 11'26" after crashing during the chase of the Armstrong break.
